Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored five runs in the seventh inning to come from behind to beat the Edinburg Roadrunners 9-2 on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings (17-15) are now 8-1 against the Roadrunners (14-18) this season after finishing 7-15 against them last season.
Roadrunners starter Aaron Guerra (4-3) induced 12 groundouts over the first six innings, dancing in and out of trouble by allowing only one of 11 base runners to score. In the seventh, however, trailing 2-1, the WhiteWings put runners on the corners with nobody out to set-up an RBI-single by Francisco Santana to tie the game. Two batters later, Leivi Ventura hit a two-run single to knock out Guerra. Gerardo Avila followed with a two-run home run off of Mike Schurz, his fourth of the season, to make it 6-2 WhteWings.
Santana finished 4-for-5, Ventura was 3-for-4 and Avila was 2-for-4.
That made a winner of Danny Rondon (2-1), who recorded the final seven outs.
The WhiteWings tacked on a three runs in the eighth on a two-run triple by Antonio DeJesus and an RBI-single by Ventura.
After WhiteWings starter Eric Blackwell struck out the first two batters he faced in the second, Welington Dotel walked and Robert Matlock and RJ Harris hit back-to-back singles to put the Roadrunners up 1-0.
Wilmer Pino led off bottom of the inning with a grounder to third, but a wide throw allow Pino to reach second base. Eric Gonzalez and Gabriel Ortiz followed with groundouts to get Pino home and tie the game.
Gonzalez finished 0-for-4 in his first game since May 31. He missed the previous 24 games with an oblique injury.
Jamar Hill led off the fourth with an infield-single, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matlock to make it 2-1.
