WHITE PLAINS - The Westchester Knicks (11-5), the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, lost a hard-fought comeback attempt against the Delaware 87ers (9-7) tonight in Westchester, the final score 116-108.
In a sold-out showdown of Eastern Division rivals, Westchester and Delaware gave the Westchester County Center a thrill of a game as the Knicks nearly came back from a 26-point deficit. The teams traded shots early for a little back-and-forth action for the first four minutes before Delaware center Christian Wood went on a tear, getting a quick seven points in just one minute. Knicks guard Jimmer Fredette answered back with a signature jumper for three, but the 87ers were on a roll and continued to rack up points against Westchester. Wood and White Plains native Sean Kilpatrick combined for 25 points as the 87ers held a 40-22 advantage over the Knicks in the first.
Delaware's momentum continued into the second quarter as they racked up as many as 26 points over Westchester. Turnovers would haunt the Knicks as the team gave up 21 points in the first half due to 15 turnovers. A shining light from a Fredette three followed by a Jordan Bachynski dunk gave Westchester a much-needed boost and the Knicks went on a 17-6 run to end the half, cutting their shortfall to 62-47.
A 12-point third quarter from Jimmer Fredette wasn't enough to stop Delaware's drive as the Knicks once again found themselves down 26 points. The Fredette and Bachynski double act cut the gap down to 17 but Westchester trailed 91-74 heading into the final quarter.
A lay-up and one from Bachynski pulled Westchester within 10 early in the fourth before a Delaware foul on Fredette gave the Knicks its smallest deficit since the first quarter as he sank both throws. Knicks guard Jordon Crawford hit back-to-back threes on a 10-3 run from Westchester to make it a one-possession game, but that was the closest the home team got as Kilpatrick hit a three of his own to eventually seal the deal for the 87ers.
Three Knicks recorded double-doubles in the loss. Jimmer Fredette paced the team with 27 points, supplying 10 assists and three rebounds. Jordan Bachynski finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Darion Atkins had 24 points and 15 rebounds. Bachynski and Atkins also added three blocks each.
Sean Kilpatrick led all scorers with 29 points, adding four rebounds and two assists. Jordan McRae followed with 24 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Off the bench, David Laury recorded the team's sole double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Westchester Knicks travel to Delaware on Saturday, Dec. 26 for a 3:00 p.m. rematch against the 87ers. The game will be broadcast live on MSG and the NBA Development League's YouTube channel.
