West Virginia Black Bears News Release
GRANVILLE, W.Va. - The West Virginia Black Bears lost 6-1 to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Saturday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark. In a lackluster performance, the Black Bears struggled to gain any momentum offensively and recorded six hits compared to the Scrappers 11 hits.
Through the first five innings, neither team scored a runner. The Scrappers got on the board first with an error that brought in a run in the top of the inning. West Virginia retaliated in the bottom of the sixth inning off a single from C Luis Navarro. After sending in Amari Bartee as a courtesy runner, Bartee turned on the jets and stole two bases before scoring on a pop fly from 2B Eric Santiago.
However, Mahoning Valley quickly extinguished any glimmer of hope West Virginia had after knotting the game in the sixth. The Scrappers put up an additional four runs in the seventh inning off LHP Beau Lowery to increase their lead to 5-1. After adding one more run in the top of the ninth, the Black Bears could not respond. West Virginia ended the game after DH Jesse Pierce struck out swinging.
Starting pitcher J.P. Massey had one of his best outings after struggling early in the season. Through five innings, Massey allowed five hits with four strikeouts with one earned run in the fifth.
The Black Bears return for the series finale against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Sunday afternoon. First pitch will be at 4:05pm, with Kids Run the Bases immediately following Sunday's game. For more information, please visit www.WestVirginiaBlackBears.com.
