
West Virginia Defeats Vermont 5-2

GRANVILLE, W.Va. - West Virginia starter RHP Luis Escobar earned his fourth victory of the season in the series rubber match as the Black Bears defeated Vermont, 5-2 on Friday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. Escobar was dominant throughout his outing allowing just one earned run on two hits through six innings, while striking out four hitters.
The Black Bears jumped ahead of the Lake Monsters early on in the second inning. A Vermont error allowed 3B Nick King to score. Then, an RBI single from 2B Kevin Mahala along with LF Ty Moore's RBI groundout gave West Virginia a 3-0 lead.
Through the first five innings, Escobar was nearly unhittable, as he did not give up a run while surrendering just one hit. In the sixth, the Lake Monsters tallied their first run of the ballgame on an RBI sacrifice fly from C Nick Collins, cutting Vermont's deficit to 3-1.
Reliever RHP Scooter Hightower entered in the seventh inning for Escobar and allowed an earned run through two innings. In the bottom of the frame, the Black Bears added a pair of runs to take a 5-1 advantage. SS Erik Forgione led off with a bunt single and came in to score on a fielder's choice before RF Kevin Krause laced an RBI single.
Vermont, though, would respond in the eighth on an RBI double down the left field line from LF Luke Persico, making the score 5-2. West Virginia reliever RHP Dylan Prohoroff retired the side in order in the ninth inning to log his first save of the season.
For the Lake Monsters, 2B Nate Mondou and Persico paced the offense as starter RHP Logan Shore dropped to 0-2, surrendering three runs (zero earned runs) over two innings. Black Bears' DH Matt Diorio and Forgione had two hits each to lead West Virginia's attack that outhit Vermont, 8-4.
Tomorrow night, West Virginia (27-32) will open a three-game series on the road as they take on the Batavia Muckdogs (15-42) at 7:05 PM from Dwyer Stadium.
