Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - Five double plays and two pickoffs from catcher Danny De La Calle proved to be the difference as the Hudson Valley Renegades swept a three-game series from the Auburn Doubledays 2-1 Friday night at Dutchess Stadium. The win moved Hudson Valley to a season-high 13 games over .500 to 35-22.
For the third straight game Auburn scored first. In the first inning, centerfielder Blake Perkins led off with a walk then went to second on a sac bunt. Rightfielder Daniel Johnson followed that with a single to center to score Perkins and give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead.
The Renegades immediately got the run back in the bottom of the first. Centerfielder Jake Fraley began the inning with a single, then stole second. After a strikeout, Miles Mastrobuoni reached on an infield single to second, which sent Fraley to third. Jake would score when the next hitter, third baseman Jim Haley, grounded out to third to tie the game at one.
The home team squandered a couple of chances to take the lead. In the second, rightfielder Angel Perez singled, stole second, then went to third on a groundout. With one away, De La Calle tapped a ball back to the mound and Perez was thrown out at the plate to end the threat. In the third, Jake Fraley got to third with one out when Haley lifted a fly ball to centerfielder Blake Perkins. The second-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals came up firing after making the catch and gunned down Fraley at the plate as the runner tagged and tried to score on a sac fly.
Auburn's best chance to score after the first came in the fourth. Shortstop Paul Panaccione reached on an error and moved to second with two out when catcher Tres Barrera singled. However, with designated hitter Ryan Ripken at the plate, Panaccione was picked off of second base on a laser-like throw from De La Calle to get the Renegades out of the jam.
Hudson Valley finally took the lead in the sixth thanks to a little luck. With one out and the bases empty, Haley tripled to left-center. The next batter, first baseman Nate Lowe, then hit a sharp groundball to the second baseman Dalton Dulin who looked toward home with Haley charging to the plate. But as he did he bobbled the baseball, which gave Haley enough time to break for home and score. Dulin still got the out at first, but the groundout gave Hudson Valley a 2-1 lead.
That was all the Renegades pitchers and defense would need as the Renegades turned a season-high five double plays and more gutty defense from De La Calle.
In the ninth, the Doubledays threatened by putting runners at first and second with one out following two singles. With Panaccione leading from first, he was picked off for the second time on the night by De La Calle who fired to first to retire the Doubledays shortstop for the second out of the inning. Closer Jayson McKinley would then get Johnson to strikeout swinging to end the game and give Hudson Valley the 2-1 win.
Getting the win for the Renegades was Travis Ott (5-0) as he continued his sensational season by allowing only one run on three hits in six innings of work while also striking out six. The loss went to Brayan Serrata (0-1) who allowed the winning run on a hit in his lone inning of work. McKinley notched his sixth save even though he allowed two hits in the ninth.
Each team banged out six hits. Nobody had more than one hit for the Renegades while the Doubledays got two singles apiece from Johnson and Barrera. Johnson drove in the only run of the game for Auburn.
Hudson Valley hits the road for the first of a three-game series Saturday with Tri-City. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Right-hander Adrian Navas (3-2, 1.81 ERA) will go for the Renegades against southpaw Austin Nicely (5-2, 6.10 ERA) of the ValleyCats. The Renegades return home Tuesday for the first of a three-game series and homestand with the Connecticut Tigers. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
