West Virginia Black Bears News Release

GRANVILLE, W. Va. - In a game that was ultimately cut short due to inclement weather, the West Virginia Black Bears put together their most complete performance of the season, resulting in a 3-0 victory over the Frederick Keys on Wednesday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark.

In contrast to the previous night's performance, the first three innings of the game moved by quickly. Both teams breezed through the first three innings in a scoreless matchup.

The Bears bats warmed up in the bottom of the fourth inning. Outfielder Sam Crail got things going for the Black Bears with a single up the middle before stealing second base. After Keys' pitcher Carter Bosch walked 2B Blaze Brothers, 3B Keenan Taylor put the Bears on the board with a line drive to center field to give West Virginia the lead. Later in the inning, Taylor scored off of a fielder's choice to first base, which extended the Black Bears' lead to 3-0.

Defensively, the Black Bears held their own in the field, shutting out the Keys through 5.1 innings. In his second outing, starting pitcher Peyton Olejnik (1-0) kept the Keys off the board, recording five strikeouts through four innings. With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, SS Tahir Meulens made a diving play to record the third out, keeping the Bears from sustaining damage heading into the home half of the inning.

West Virginia managed to record one out in the top of the sixth inning before the game was delayed due to inclement weather. After thirty minutes of a rain delay, the game was called and the Black Bears celebrated their first win of the season.

The West Virginia Black Bears now move to 1-5 on the season, with the rubber match against the Frederick Keys scheduled for Thursday, June 9 at The Mon. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
