Selman, Irwin and Team USA Take to the Ice at 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament

Out of 12 forwards selected to the team two of them, Kevin Irwin and Justin Selman, are planning on suiting up for the Buccaneers during the 2010 - 2011 season. Both players were selected in the 2009 USHL Futures Draft and spent last season on the Buccaneers futures list. Irwin and Selman both attended the Buccaneers Tryout Camp held July 17-20 at Buccaneer Arena and made quite the impression on the coaching staff and spectators - making the All Star game on the Sunday of camp. On Saturday, August 7th Team USA battled and defeated Slovakia, 3-0 in an exhibition game in Piestany. The team then defeated the Czech Republic in the opening game of the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament on Monday, August 9th. Irwin was named the U.S. player of the game in the 3-2 defeat of the Czechs.
On Tuesday, August 10th the team fell to Russia, 6-5 in a five round shootout. Irwin had an assist on the first goal of the game - a five-on-three power-play that put Team USA ahead at 8:33 in the first period. On Wednesday, August 11th Team USA defeated Finland, 5-2 advancing the team to the semifinal with a 2-0-1-0 record. Selman scored the first goal for Team USA in the win.
The U.S. U-18 Select team would battle it out against Sweden in the semifinal game on Thursday, August 12th. They were able to defeat Sweden, 5-4, in overtime. The win would send the team to the championship game against Canada.
Stephen Michalek stopped 23 of 24 shots faced, but the U.S. Under-18 Select Team fell just short against Canada, 1-0, on Saturday in the championship game. The second-place Team USA posted its best finish at the tournament since 2006, compiling a 3-0-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) overall record.
Upon arriving back in the U.S., Irwin and Selman will have just a few short days at home before they head to Des Moines to begin their USHL careers.
