
Weekly Update: Chivas USA Travels to Columbus

CHIVAS USA TO FACE COLUMBUS CREW THIS SATURDAY: Chivas USA hits the road again this week, traveling East for a Saturday game against the Columbus Crew. The match at Columbus Crew Stadium kicks off at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Prime Ticket and W Radio 690 AM. Chivas USA hosted Columbus earlier this season on April 9th, as the two sides played to a scoreless draw at The Home Depot Center.
BUSY WEEK AGAINST WESTERN CONFERENCE RIVALS: After visiting Columbus this weekend, the Red-and-White hosts two home games against Western Conference rivals at The Home Depot Center next week. First, Chivas USA will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday, June 1st, at 7:30 p.m. PT. The Red-and-White tied 0-0 the first game of the season against the expansion team at Vancouver. Chivas USA will then face another Western Conference rival, the Portland Timbers, on Saturday, June 4th, at 7:30 p.m. It will be the first time Chivas USA faces the Portland Timbers in MLS. Chivas USA is currently in seventh place with 12 points in the Western Conference, while Vancouver is last with 8 points and Portland sits in third with 17 points.
YOUTH TEAM TRYOUTS COMING UP IN BELL GARDENS AND SIMI VALLEY: Chivas USA will be holding 'Sangre Nueva' Youth Team tryouts coming up this summer at a pair of locations in Southern California. First is a tryout in Bell Gardens on June 3, followed by another tryout in Simi Valley on July 23. Chivas USA coaching staff members will be in attendance at each of these events to assess and evaluate the entire player pool with the goal of finding players for the Chivas USA Youth Teams. RED-AND-WHITE FALL IN 2011'S FIRST SUPERCLÃÂSICO: Chivas USA were defeated by the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 in Saturday evening's rivalry match. The game's lone goal came from Chad Barrett in the 26th minute. The final SuperClásico of the season is Sunday October 16th. MENDOZA APPROACHING CHIVAS USA APPEARANCE RECORD: Francisco 'Panchito' Mendoza has now played in 118 games for Chivas USA, getting close to Jonathan Bornstein's record 123 appearances. Mendoza, the Mexican player with the most all-time Major League Soccer appearances, returned to Chivas USA this season after playing the past two years in Mexico. The fan favorite and Chivas USA original has appeared in 7 matches this season, and passed Sacha Kljestan's 114 appearances earlier this year.
PEARCE PLAYS EVERY MINUTE: Defender Heath Pearce has played every minute so far this season, his first with Chivas USA. He has started all ten games, playing a total of 900 minutes. Ben Zemanski, Ante Jazic and Nick LaBrocca are the only other players to have started all ten games, but they have each been substituted at least once, leaving the 26-year old Pearce as the only Goat to play every possible minute thus far.
ACADEMY PRODUCT CHRIS CORTEZ SIGNS WITH CHIVAS USA, MAKES HIS DEBUT: Chivas USA announced last Sunday the signing of youth product Chris Cortez, a California-native and a forward who has played with the U-18 team in the Chivas USA Youth Academy system. Cortez, from Mission Viejo, Calif. has participated with the Red-and-White in preseason matches and also in the Reserve League where he has tallied 3 goals for the Red-and-White. He made his second appearance in a first team game this weekend in the SuperClásico, entering the match as a substitute.
FLORES AND KENNEDY IN STARTING-LINEUP STREAK: Midfielder Jorge Flores is the longest continually serving Chivas USA player, having joined the team in 2007. Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy isn't far behind, one of several current players who joined the team prior to the 2008 season. Both players began 2011 on the bench, before moving into the starting lineup in the season's third game and starting ever since. The eight consecutive games in the starting lineup is a record for both players. Flores has previously only started 6 games in a season. Kennedy started 8 games (non-consecutively) in 2008, but missed all of 2009 and much of 2010 with injuries.
'CHIVAS AT THE PARK' CONTINUES SATURDAY, JUNE 11 AT BOYLE HEIGHTS RECREATION CENTER: Chivas USA's popular 'Chivas at the Park' program will continue with a session on Saturday, June 11 at Boyle Heights Recreation Center, 933 Mott St., Los Angeles 90023 . The clinics offer participating boys and girls ages 5-15 the opportunity to learn soccer techniques and practice drills that highlight teamwork in an environment that promotes the importance of fitness for the entire family. For only $5 each participant receives 90 minutes of soccer instruction, a Chivas at the Park t-shirt, and a certificate of completion.
