Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
LAST WEEK'S RECAP
Overall Picture: The Greenville Road Warriors (23-13-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, tackled their fourth three-game series of the season last week and emerged with a 2-1-0 record, including a pair of shootout victories.
On Friday, the Road Warriors opened their second consecutive three-game weekend series at home and suffered a 4-1 setback to the Fort Wayne Komets, despite peppering goaltender Roman Will with 40 shots. Defenseman Ryan Hegarty scored Greenville's only goal at 4:37 of the second period, while forward Christian Ouellette notched a pair of tallies for the Komets. Between the pipes, Jason Missiaen made 32 saves but suffered his first loss since Nov. 28th, which snapped a career-best five-game win streak and a seven-game streak where he went unbeaten in regulation (6-0-1).
The Road Warriors responded just 24 hours later and took revenge against the Komets with a 3-2 shootout win on SANDLAPPER Securities Rink. Forward Chris McCarthy stole the show by scoring the first and last goals of the game, while All-Star netminder Jeff Malcolm made 37 saves to help Greenville past the league's top team on Star Wars Night. McCarthy, Vinny Saponari and Kyle Jean each scored in a five-round shootout for the Warriors, who ended the first half of the season at 22-13-1, six points better than the team was halfway through the 2013-14 campaign.
It was the same song, but second verse on Sunday afternoon as the Road Warriors notched a 3-2 shootout victory over in-state rival South Carolina at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Trevor Parkes knotted the game at 2-2 with less than five minutes to play in regulation before Jean and Josh Nicholls scored in a five-round shootout to lead Greenville to the win. Jeff Malcolm made it two consecutive victories by tallying 36 saves in regulation, and four more in the shootout, for his team-leading 14th win this season. It was also the Road Warriors' first victory against South Carolina since Nov. 1st, ending a five-game skid versus the Stingrays in the season-series.
