Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) -- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League have clinched the Northeast Division regular season championship after this past weekend's sweep of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs and Sunday losses by Oklahoma City in Colorado and by Bossier-Shreveport at home against Rio Grande Valley.
The RiverKings (42-15-3) have 87 points for first place in the Northeast Division standings with four games to play. That's six more standings points than second-place Oklahoma City (37-17-7), which has 81 points with three games to play.
It is possible that Oklahoma City could conceivably win out and tie the RiverKings in points, if Mississippi does not win any of its four remaining games in regulation time. However, Mississippi's greater number of victories gives it the championship.
Playoff dates have not yet been determined, however the RiverKings could start their first playoff series as early as March 25th if they are the second seed in the Northern Conference, or as late as March 30th if they are the first seed. The exact playoff dates and schedule will be announced when they are finalized.
This season will mark the third staight year that the RiverKings have made the Central Hockey League playoffs. Last season, the RiverKings made the playoffs and played division rival Texas in the best-of-three first round series, losing to the Brahmas in three games.
Two years ago, the Memphis RiverKings qualified for the playoffs and made the conference finals, before losing to Colorado in six games.
In addition to this season, the RiverKings' franchise won regular season division titles as the Memphis RiverKings in 1997, 2001, and 2002.
The Memphis RiverKings have won two CHL league championships in consecutive fashion, claiming the Ray Miron President's Cup in 2002 and in 2003, both times against Austin.
The Mississippi RiverKings next play the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center, starting at 7:05 PM. Ticket information is available from the RiverKings offices at 662-342-1755.
