CHL Central Hockey League

Shots from the Point

March 16, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

1- The fourth and final CHL division winner was determined this past weekend with the Mississippi RiverKings beating the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs twice and subsequently clinching the Northeast Division. The RiverKings join the Colorado Eagles of the Northwest Division, the Odessa Jackalopes of the Southwest Division and the Texas Brahmas of the Southeast Division as division winners. The race for the Governors' Cup is still going on with the Eagles 90 points leading the way over the 'Kings who have 87 points and the Brahmas who have 85 points.

2- The Odessa Jackalopes power play has been unreal as of late and is close to taking its mark as the best in CHL history. Over their current four-game win streak, the Jacks have gone 11 for 35 (31%) and on the season have scored 106 PPG's (the most since the Oklahoma City Blazers set the single season record with 124 power play goals in the 1995-96 season. On the season, the Jacks are connecting at a league-best 22.5% rate and are led by Sebastien Thinel's 20 PPG's and Kory Karlander's 15.

3- With one week remaining in the regular season, only one spot remains open for the 2009 Ray Miron President's Cup Championship playoffs. The fifth and final team from the Southern Conference has yet to be determined with the Corpus Christi IceRays owning the slot right now with 59 points trailed by Arizona with 57 points and New Mexico with 55 points. A win on Monday night by the Rays versus Laredo would officially eliminate the defending champions Sundogs from contention and make things very difficult for New Mexico who would then have to win out and hope that Corpus Christi does not earn a point the rest of the way. Should matters stay undetermined, the Scorpions host the Sundogs in a pair of games this weekend in what could be huge games.
