Orlando Mayhem News Release

COACHES: Orlando: Mike Vessio; 1st Year: Miami

INJURIES/DISABLED LIST: Miami: n/a Orlando: K Angie Mickel (leg, out) Cindy Welch (pregnant, out), Stacy Williams (pregnant, out) ....

STARZ-FURY -- THE GAME: With a week off to recover from a 39-0 loss to Atlanta, the Orlando Starz return to action Saturday in Miami's historic Orange Bowl to face the Miami Fury in an IWFL South Atlantic Division tilt.

Miami opened its season last week with a 26-13 victory at the Tampa Bay Terminators. SERIES: Depends on who you talk to. Miami won last year's meeting on the field by a count of 35-6, but fielded more than the allotted number of players on the roster. So we're going to say its 1-0 in favor of the Starz.

OFF THE FIELD EXPOSURE: Will all the other IWFL teams who have appeared on CNN this week please stand up? The attention focuses around one Charlotte Chambers, our 70-year old "Gridiron Granny" who has been featured on the local CBS affiliate BET and CNN. CBS Early show will be in town 4/29/03 to do a segment on Miss Charlotte as well. With a feature on The Jimmy Kimmel Live show sometime next week.

COACHING CHANGE: Starz CEO announced this week a shakeup in the Starz coaching staff. Mike Vessio will now serve as head coach with Tino Rosanova handling special teams .

LAST TIME OUT:

ATLANTA 39, ORLANDO 0: We don't want to talk about it. Really.

THE GOOD: There were a couple of bright spots. The Starz defense did force four Atlanta turnovers ... . LB Laurie Aversano and DB Ayesha "Skirt" Jones got some props from the Atlanta fans for a couple of vicious hits ... Brandi Petit had three punts go over 30 yards... The room service at the hotel was pretty good and I got to see John Smoltz get a save in the Braves' 6-4 win over the Phillies Friday night...

THE BAD: The offense didn't get a first down until the fourth quarter ...The defense gave up four touchdowns on plays longer than 30 yards. THE UGLY: We're a women's football team that's been outscored 47-0. Do I need to write anything else?

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

QB Kahs Sky-Deer: (2003 Stats: 12 of 37 for 120 yards, 0 TD, 4 INT) Had a brutal game against Atlanta, getting picked off four times (one returned for a TD) and sacked three times. One of the most experienced quarterbacks in women's football, Sky- quarterbacked for the Daytona Beach Barracudas of the Women's Professional Football League, where she threw for 288 yards and four touchdowns in a playoff game.

RB Ayesha Jones (26 carries for 68 yards, 1 reception for 19 yards, 8 tackles) A team captain, Jones moves to running back after playing receiver and safety last season.

LB Laurie Aversano (21 tackles, 1 sack) The Starz' most aggressive player on defense.

OL/DL Jayne Hamilton After playing linebacker, defensive end, and defensive tackle last year, Hamilton will see action on the offensive and defensive line this season.

WELL, AT LEAST WE CAN SAY IT'S A BALANCED PASSING ATTACK: Sky-Deer has completed her 12 passes to seven different receivers: Lois Thompson, Martina Wells, Andrea Anderson and Gina Solano each have two receptions so far.
