IS THIS DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN? Yes, we're playing the Miami Fury again at home for the second straight week. You'll see on the league web site that we're supposed to be in Virginia on Sunday playing a neutral site game, but guess what? It didn't work out. So instead of South Beach, my favorite place in the world, we're back at Dr. Phillips pretending that the riders on the Universal Studios roller coasters are cheering from us.
YEAH, THIS WILL PACK âEM IN: The Fury can clinch the IWFL's South East Division with a victory.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: Miami 20, Orlando 0; THE GOOD: Joey Cafaso showed some improvement at running back, gaining 32 yards... Christine Shaw saw action at QB ... Jana Vander Loop and Laurie Aversano played well on defense. ... THE BAD: Orlando still can't contain a run game...the offense didn't get a first down in the first half ... Five turnovers ... Miami had a 1st and 50, but got the ball back on a special teams blunder ... THE UGLY: The line on Kahs Sky Deer: 0 for 15 with 3 INT. If we were Florida State, we'd be under investigation after a game like that (Next week, we'll make a Gator joke to keep all you Crimonole fans happy).
MEET COACH MIKE: The Starz' new Head Coach is Mike Vessio. He's a native of the Bronx, New York, and was a standout performer at Mahopac High School, where he earned all Conference and All District awards. He is also the General Manager at Tees & Cues in Maitland. Martino Rosanova, a native of Detroit and a massage therapist, assists Vessio.
NOW FOR THE BIG NEWS : Orlando Starz CEO Marsha Beatty announced today that admission to the Independent Women's Football League team's final two home games May 24 and 31 at Dr. Phillips High School will be $1 for everyone.
The Starz (0-5) will face the Miami Fury May 24 and the Atlanta Xplosion May 31. An HBO film crew will be taping a segment featuring the Starz' 70-year old defensive back Charlotte Chambers on the 24th.
"It's a way of getting a good visual for the HBO taping and we're also very aware that we are a struggling team on the field,'' Beatty said. "Also, Miami was here last week. We're hopeful we can make up some of the money with addition concession and merchandise sales."
Beatty did say the Starz are looking for support for their trip to Detroit June 7 to play the winless Blaze in an exhibition game. It'll take an approximate $300 per player to help offset travel costs. Call Beatty for more information.
NEXT WEEK: The Starz concludes a four-game home stand against the Atlanta Xplosion.
