Tampa Tarpons News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - RHP Beck Way flirted with a no-hitter while Jasson Dominguez logged his first-career three-hit game in a 6-0 victory in Game One, and the Tarpons got home runs by Juan De Leon and Ryder Green en route to a 5-3 win in Game Two as Tampa swept Clearwater in both ends of a doubleheader on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Way retired 11-straight Threshers before allowing T.J. Rumfield to reach on a hit-by-pitch in the fourth. After sitting down the next six batters, Way allowed a two-out single by Ethan Wilson in the sixth, ending the bid.
Casey Martin reached on a hit-by-pitch before Way got Rumfield to ground out to end the sixth. Way (W, 3-1) logged his second-straight quality start, allowing one hit and two hit-batters over a scoreless six innings, striking out five and walking none on 78 pitches (50 strikes).
Dominguez and Trey Sweeney hit back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the first, and Cooper Bowman followed with a double to left, driving home Dominguez. Sweeney then scored on the ensuing groundout by Green, giving the Tarpons a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Carlos Narvaez walked and took third on a single by Eric Wagaman before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Dominguez. Tampa tacked on again the third when Bowman walked, stole second and later scored on a double to right by Aldenis Sanchez for a 4-0 score.
LHP Samuel Aldegheri (L, 0-1) started for Clearwater and allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over two and one-third innings, striking out two on 56 pitches (32 strikes).
Sanchez drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and proceeded to steal both second and third base before scoring on a base hit to center by Benjamin Cowles. In the sixth, Wagaman walked and took third on a ground-rule double by Dominguez before scoring on a groundout by Bowman, giving Tampa a 6-0 lead.
RHP Carson Coleman tallied three strikeouts while stranding a two-out walk in the seventh to close out the game for Tampa.
RHP Tyrone Yulie got the nod in Game Two and stranded three walks while holding the Threshers hitless over a scoreless four innings, striking out three on 63 pitches (43 strikes).
Tyler Hardman and Cowles both singled with one out in the second, and Ben Rice reached on a misplay at first by Kervin Pichardo. All runners advanced as Pichardo made a wild throw against the first base dugout, allowing Hardman to score. After a mound visit, De Leon followed with a three-run home run to left, giving Tampa a 4-0 lead.
Green added to the lead with a solo blast to right-center with one out in the third.
RHP Eduar Segovia (L, 0-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk in three innings, striking out four on 61 pitches (35 strikes) for Clearwater.
RHP Jhonatan Muñoz relieved Yulie in the fifth and worked around a one-out walk by inducing a double-play, thus taking yet another no-hitter bid into the sixth. Once again, Ethan Wilson broke up the bid, this time with a one-out single in the sixth.
Wilson then took second on a two-out single by Rumfield, and both scored on a three-run home run to right by Jared Carr, cutting the lead to 5-3.
Muñoz (W, 4-3) issued a leadoff walk to open the seventh, bringing the tying run up to the plate for Clearwater. After striking out Pichardo, Muñoz got Edgar Made to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double-play to close the game, securing the sweep.
Dominguez (3-for-6, 2B, Sac-F, RBI, R) and Sweeney (2-for-4, R) each logged multi-hit games in Game One, while Hardman (2-for-6, R, SB) tallied multiple hits in Game Two.
Series continues with a matinee on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., with RHP Blas Castano (1-1, 4.26) set to start against RHP Dylan Castaneda (2-3, 10.04).
