This Weeks Outings: WAVE PULL AWAY FROM SHARKS IN SECOND HALF, 21-4
Santos gets first hat trick and Howes adds six points to league-leading total
MILWAUKEE (March 9, 2008) -- Their 15th consecutive playoff berth clinched while they sat at home, the Milwaukee Wave made sure on Sunday they would not be accused of backing in.
Jonathan Santos scored his first MISL hat trick as the Wave won for the sixth time in seven games, 21-4 over the Orlando Sharks, in front of 6,332 fans.
When Philadelphia lost to Baltimore on Friday, it extended the Wave's impressive postseason streak. Only the NHL's Detroit Red Wings (17 years) have a longer active run of playoff appearances. But the Wave are still playing for one of the two byes available in the MISL playoffs, and held up their end Sunday against the Sharks (3-23).
Milwaukee (17-7) led only 8-4 at halftime, but Troy Dusosky scored the key goal just 1:37 into the third period. Greg Howes cleared a ball out of the corner to a waiting Dusosky, who lined up and drilled his second 3-pointer of the year.
Warren Ukah followed up with a shot block and coast-to-coast solo run four minutes later, and Howes ended the quarter with his MISL-leading ninth restart goal of the season to make it 15-4 heading into the fourth.
Howes had four assists to go with his goal and retook the league scoring lead with 95 points. His last one was a nice piece of strategy on a shootout. Instead of taking the shot himself, Howes drew out the keeper and then laid the ball off to Marcio Leite, who had sprinted from the midfield line and easily touched the ball in.
Rookie Marcel Feenstra was the winning keeper, his fourth victory in as many starts. Feenstra made 14 saves.
SANTOS NAMED MISL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
MILWAUKEE (March 12, 2008) -- His first Major Indoor Soccer League hat trick was enough to earn Wave rookie Jonathan Santos the league's Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending March 9.
The 23-year-old sparked the Wave to a 21-4 victory over the Orlando Sharks, the Wave's sixth win in their last seven outings.
Santos scored twice in the second quarter to help Milwaukee build an 8-4 halftime lead, then closed his hat trick in the fourth as part of the Wave's 13-0 second-half run.
The barrage gave Santos 19 points in 18 appearances in his first season since arriving from Sergipe, Brazil. Normally a midfielder, Santos has been filled in on defense due to injuries and also has 15 blocks this year.
DONALD DRIVER SIGNS WAVE OF KINDNESS HARLEY-DAVIDSON
Packers Pro Bowler joins Pele, Beckham, LeBron others on Wave charity project
MILWAUKEE (March 10, 2008) - He'll have a new quarterback throwing him passes in the fall, but Donald Driver remains one of the Green Bay Packers' brightest stars on and off the field.
He's third all-time among Packers receivers in receptions and fourth in receiving yardage, and has been honored with three trips to the Pro Bowl.
Driver also has established his own foundation to benefit homeless mothers and underprivileged children, and has been honored as the team's "Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year" for his work in the community.
It's only fitting, then, that Driver agreed to autograph the Wave of Kindness Harley-Davidson, joining superstars such as Pele, LeBron James, David Beckham, Carl Lewis and many, many more.
