Milwaukee Wave News Release

Looking Ahead...

The Wave plays games against the St. Louis Steamers and Chicago Storm on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Steamers come to town on Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. start at the U.S. Cellular Arena. It is the second visit to Milwaukee for St. Louis, with the first game a 6-5 overtime victory for the Wave. Milwaukee came back from a three goal deficit to tie the game with just one second remaining in regulation and Todd Dusosky made the Wave winners in overtime ... Sunday's game in Chicago will be the third contest of the season against the Storm. The Wave hasn't seen the Storm since the second week of the season (November 12). Milwaukee opened the season with two games against Chicago and won both of them.

Two games are on the schedule for next weekend as well. For the third consecutive Friday, the Wave will host a team at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Next week the Philadelphia KiXX will return to Milwaukee for the second time this season. After Friday's game, the teams will head back to the Keystone State for a rematch. The Wave has one both games (one home and one road) against the KiXX this season.

News and Notes...

Last Action: 1/6/06 vs. Baltimore Blast, L, 8-5 - The Wave dropped their first contest of the season against the Baltimore Blast. The Blast came out firing and took an early 2-0 lead over the Wave. Greg Howes and Giuliano Oliviero responded with goals for Milwaukee to knot the score at two, but David Bascome gave the lead back to Baltimore and the Blast didn't look back from that point on. Giuliano Celenza, the MISL's leading goal scorer, started his big night in the second quarter when he sandwiched two goals around a Marcelo Fontana score. He also added the first goal of the second half as Baltimore outscored Milwaukee 2-0 to enter the fourth quarter with a 7-3 lead. The Wave didn't go down without a fight as Troy Dusosky added two fourth quarter power play goals to trim the lead to two with about 10 minutes remaining. Just as Milwaukee closed the gap, Celenza struck for his fourth goal of the game for the game's final 8-5 margin. Celena now has seven goals in two games against the Wave.

Last Action: 1/7/06 @ Baltimore Blast, W, 7-6 OT - The Wave avenged their first loss of the season (to Baltimore on Friday) with a 7-6 overtime victory in Baltimore. Milwaukee emerged with the victory in a game that saw five lead changes when Todd Dusosky scored the game winner 32 seconds into overtime. It was a back and forth game as each team, at one point, scored three unanswered goals. Baltimore tallied three in a row to lead 3-1 after one quarter. But Greg Howes, Matt Schmidt and Marcelo Fontana all scored in the third quarter to put the Wave back up by a goal. The teams combined for four goals in the third quarter, but the Wave still held the lead. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter, but only David Bascome capitalized on an opportunity and his goal at 10:09 sent the game into overtime. Todd Dusosky scored just 32 seconds in to give the Wave their second overtime victory of the season. Dusosky has scored the game winners each of the overtime games with the first one coming on December 3 in a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Steamers..

Brotherly Milestone: It's only fitting that the next game for twin brothers, Todd and Troy Dusosky, will be the 350th and 300th of their careers, respectively. Both players began their pro career with the Cleveland Crunch in 1995-96 with Todd coming to the Wave during the 1996-97 season and Troy joining the team in the 2001-02 season.

Milestone: Part II: Todd Dusosky is closing in on another milestone; his 700th career point. Dusosky entered the season with 673 points in his 10-year career and he is now just nine points away from 700. He was named the MISL's Offensive Player of the Month for December after he scored 10 points (five goals, five assists) in leading Milwaukee to a 4-0 record.

#1 Win With Wave: Wave goalkeeper, Brian Rowland, received his first start with Milwaukee against his former team, the Blast, on Saturday. He came away with his first victory of the season and finished with 11 saves on 17 shots faced. Rowland spent two seasons with Baltimore before being selected by the California Cougars in the 2005 Dispersal Draft. He was traded to the Wave as part of the deal that sent Aaron Susi to California.

Got Blocks? After blocking six shots in two games over the weekend, Matt Schmidt now leads the league (by five) in blocks. Schmidt's season total of 23 blocks through 10 games is more than half of his career-high 44 blocks in 39 games last season. Schmidt and fellow Wisconsin native, Chad Dombrowski, have combined for 39 of the Wave's 85 blocks this season. That adds up to about 46 percent of the team's blocks.

Wave is Defensive: Despite giving up eight and six goals over the weekend (to the league's top offensive squad, the Baltimore Blast), the Wave still leads the MISL in many defensive categories. Their goals against average went up to 4.0, but it's still more than half of a goal lower than the next closest team (St. Louis, 4.7). The Wave is one of just two teams to hold opponents under five goals per game. Fittingly, Milwaukee has allowed the fewest goals in every quarter except the first.

December Sweep: On Tuesday, January 3, the MISL announced that Todd Dusosky (offense), Matt Schmidt (defense) and Nick Vorberg (goalkeeper) were all named players of the month for December. Dusosky averaged 2.5 points per game in the month and finished with five goals and five assists in four games. Milwaukee native, Matt Schmidt, led the MISL with 10 blocks in the month and also contributed seven points on offense. Vorberg won his second consecutive Goalkeeper of the Month honors as he continues to lead the MISL in most goalkeeper statistics.
