Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE (Feb. 15, 2009) - All season long, the Milwaukee Wave and the Detroit Ignition have been battling each other for supremacy atop the XSL standings. Halfway into the inaugural XSL season, both teams can claim stake in first place.

Detroit held a one-game lead over the Wave coming into Sunday's game at the U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, thanks in part to their 3-1 series record over the Wave this season. Knowing that a loss could severely ruin any chance at a title, Milwaukee shut down Detroit's attack en route to an 8-4 victory.

The result put Milwaukee (7-4) and Detroit (6-3) in a virtual tie for first place.

Chad Burt opened up the scoring for Milwaukee with 5:27 left to play in the first quarter, ripping a shot past the goalkeeper after stealing the ball from Detroit defender Zach Wilkes. The Ignition would answer early in the second quarter when Leo Gibson tucked a shot inside the right post, tying the game 2-all.

Milwaukee had several quality chances throughout the second quarter, but had a difficult time getting the ball past Danny Waltman, the XSL's January Goalkeeper of the Month. But the Wave finally converted with 35 seconds left in the half, when J.P. Rodrigues found Brookfield native Brett Wiesner to take the 4-2 lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Burt helped Milwaukee extend its lead when he scored with 14:10 left to go in the contest. Marco Terminesi sealed the victory for the Wave when he scored his ninth goal of the season on an assist from recently activated Nilson Pernambuco at the 4:00 mark.

Ryan Mack concluded the scoring for Detroit when he scored with 24 seconds left in the game.

The victory was Milwaukee coach Keith Tozer's 600th career regular season victory, 394 of which have come with the Wave.

Milwaukee will now gear up for three games in a row against the Chicago Storm, starting with a 2 p.m. next Sunday in Milwaukee. The first 3,500 fans receive a We Energies/Wave puzzle cube, and Disney Channel star Debby Ryan will greet fans from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets are available at any Ticketmaster outlet, or by calling the Wave office at 414-224-9283.
