Milwaukee Wave News Release
(Milwaukee, WI) The Milwaukee Wave, a member of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that it has signed midfielder Erick Acevedo to a multi-year contract beginning with the current 2004-05 MISL season. Acevedo will be eligible to play immediately starting with the Wave's next game, which is tomorrow night (12/3, 7:35 PM) against the St. Louis Steamers at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, MO (540 AM, WRRD and www.milwaukeewave.com). The Wave will also be in action on Saturday night (12/4) when it hosts the Chicago Storm in a 6:05 PM match at U.S. Cellular Arena (www.milwaukeewave.com).
The 5-6, 140 lb Acevedo comes to Wave from the Guatemalan National Futsal Team where he established himself as one of his country's premier players. Since 2000, the 24-year old Acevedo has scored 35 goals in 41 games with the Guatemalan team, including four in the 2003 Gold Cup tournament in Anaheim, CA (which included the U.S., Mexico, and Canada) in which he was selected tournament MVP. It was at the Gold Cup that Acevedo was discovered by Wave Coach / Vice President â Soccer Operations Keith Tozer, who is also the head coach of the U.S. National Futsal Team.
"We spotted Erick while he was playing for the Guatemalan futsal team," said Tozer. "He has all the tools: speed, quickness, technique, and a great left foot. Our hope is that with his futsal experience as well as his professional outdoor experience his transition will not take too long."
In addition to his futsal experience, Acevedo has also played professionally for Comunicaciones FC, one of Guatemala's top outdoor clubs.
Saturday is also Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Sports Medicine Center Work-Out with the Wave and Team Picture Card Night, with the first 5,000 fans receiving a Wave Team Picture Card courtesy of Froedtert. It's also the annual WMIL Teddy Bear Toss Game, with all fans encouraged to bring unused stuffed animals to toss on the field after the Wave scores its first goal. The stuffed animals will be collected and donated to Toys for Tots.
