XSL Milwaukee Wave

Wave retake first with 13-2 rout of Ignition

March 15, 2009 - Xtreme Soccer League (XSL)
Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE (March 15, 2009) - Even though the XSL does not have a formal postseason, the U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee was filled with a playoff-type atmosphere on Sunday. More than 7,000 fans were in attendance to watch another battle for first place between the Milwaukee Wave and the Detroit Ignition, with the Wave at the winning end of a 13-2 contest. With the victory the Wave (9-6) are a full game ahead of the Ignition (8-7), with a rematch slated Friday night in Detroit.

The 7,108 fans were able to celebrate early, as Marco Terminesi scored the game's first goal just five minutes into the first quarter. Terminesi would later score his 13th goal of the season in the second quarter with a somewhat lucky three-point goal, as his shot would first bounce off the wall before hitting Detroit goalkeeper Danny Waltman in the back, and falling into the net. With the two goals and as well as an assist, Terminesi passed Giuliano Oliviero as the leading scorer for the Wave this season.

Adding to the Wave's scoring was Pernambuco, who found paydirt in both the second and fourth quarters. His two goals could be seen as a nice little birthday gift to himself, as he celebrated his 24th birthday with the Wave victory.

Adding to the scoring for the Wave were Jonathan Santos and recent acquisition Dino Delevski.

The Ignition's lone goal game from the foot of Zach Wilkes, as Detroit couldn't find a way to figure out Wave keeper Nick Vorberg. Vorberg allowed just one goal in a game for the second time this season, and finished the day with 17 saves.

While Detroit is now looking up at Milwaukee, the Ignition have a chance for payback in just a few days. The two teams square off again at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Detroit, where Milwaukee is winless in its last eight attempts. It's the last time the two teams will meet this season, so another playoff-type environment is very likely.

After that the Wave will head to New Jersey next Sunday and then return home for their final home game of the season, when they host New Jersey on Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m. It's Fan Appreciation Day and the annual Cousins Subs Mascot Game. Family 4-Packs, with four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs, are just $44. For more information or tickets, visit milwaukeewave.com or call 414-224-9283.
