(Milwaukee, WI) The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Milwaukee Wave forward Greg Howes has been named the league's Most Valuable Player for the 2003-04 season.

The 27-year old Howes, a native of Tacoma, WA enjoyed a banner campaign for the Wave as he helped Milwaukee to a league-best 27-9 mark during the regular season. The fourth year pro from Oregon State posted league leading-totals of 57 goals and 85 points (57 goals + 28 assists) to claim the league's scoring crown, 18 points ahead of his nearest challenger (Monterrey's Genoni Martinez who finished with 67 points). He also finished the campaign with a team-record seven hat-tricks, five of which were four-goal outings to set another team record. In addition to leading the league in shorthanded goals (2) and finishing second in power play goals (13), Howes also topped the league with nine game-winning goals. The "Howitzer" was named MISL Offensive Player of the Week on three occasions (weeks ending 11/2, 12/7, and 3/7) and was also honored as MISL Offensive Player of the Month in December, February, and March.

As durable as he is talented, Howes concluded the post-season with a team-record 165 consecutive games played streak (regular and post-season) breaking the previous mark set by Michael King (161 straight) from 1996-2000. He also enters the 2004 A-League season with Wave United having appeared in 112 straight indoor / outdoor matches since the start of the 2002-03 indoor season.

"It's an honor to know that a lot of the hard work I've put into the game is paying off," said Howes. "It's also something I can always share with my family and friends as well as the people I've played with. It's an award that's also predicated on your team's success so I think it's certainly something that can be attributed to my coaches and teammates, as well. Of course, I'd trade it (the MVP trophy) in a second for another championship ring if I could."

Howes, who earned a championship ring in his first season with the Wave (2000-01) has been frustrated in his quest for another following the Wave's third straight title series setback in the recently completed 2004 MISL Championship Series. (Baltimore defeated Milwaukee three-games-to-none in the best-of-five series.) However, the MISL MVP won't have much time to dwell on the past indoor season; he's scheduled to resume action with the Wave United (A-League) outdoor team when Milwaukee hosts the Edmonton Aviators in its season opener Friday, May 14 (7:05 PM) at Uihlein Soccer Park. Howes is also expected to play for the U.S. National Futsal Team in its two-game CONCACAF qualifier against Honduras on May 18 and May 20 at U.S. Cellular Arena.

"All of us in the Wave organization are very proud of Greg's accomplishments this season," said Wave Coach Keith Tozer. "His play throughout the year was a big reason why our season was so successful."

Tickets for Wave United and the U.S. Futsal games are available by calling the Wave / Wave United Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283).
