MONTERREY, Mexico (Dec. 27, 2009) - Josh Rife scored at the 7:15 mark of overtime to give the Milwaukee Wave a 19-17 victory over La Raza de Monterrey at Arena Monterrey on Sunday.
The Wave (3-2) survived after giving up leads of 7-2 and 15-11, then allowing Monterrey (2-4) to force overtime on a sixth-attacker goal with 48 seconds left. The victory pulled them into a tie with Rockford (3-2), which lost 10-8 at home to Baltimore on Sunday. Baltimore (4-1) visits Milwaukee at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Giuliano Oliviero led the Wave with a hat trick, the third goal putting the Wave on top 15-11 with 11:11 remaining. Two goals just 61 seconds apart by Monterrey tied the score, however. Ian Bennett's second score put Milwaukee on top, but Monterrey's John Krause pushed the game to overtime in the final minute.
Monterrey outshot the Wave 40-20, but failed to convert any of its three power play chances. The Wave, meanwhile, scored two power-play goals in three attempts. Overall, the Wave have killed 9 of 11 opponent power plays, while scoring three shorthanded goals.
It was a far cry from the Wave's last trip to Monterrey, when they led 8-0 in the first quarter on the way to a 15-0 victory. But they still led nearly the entire game, once Rife's 3-pointer put them on top just 5:12 into the contest.
Bennett scored a key goal just eight seconds into the third quarter, as the Wave tried to fend off a power play. He chested down a long ball near the top of the penalty area, then struck a volley into the far corner, past keeper Steve Reese. Playing for starter Jose Bontti, Reese allowed nine goals in 20 shots. Wave keeper Nick Vorberg, meanwhile, was credited with 32 saves in 40 shots.
Thursday, the Wave host the Baltimore Blast at 2 p.m. in the annual New Year's Eve game. There will be a party down on the field following the game, as the players mingle and fans ring in the New Year at 5 p.m. CST, midnight in Berlin. Call 414-224-9283 and get four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas for $59. Ask for the Family 4-Pack.
