Wave fall in Detroit, 10-4
February 8, 2009 - Xtreme Soccer League (XSL)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
PLYMOUTH, Mich. (Feb. 8, 2009) - Compuware Sports Arena remained the Wave's House of Horrors on Sunday, as the Detroit Ignition beat the Wave 10-4 and took a one-game lead in the Xtreme Soccer League standings.
Milwaukee (6-4) has lost eight consecutive games overall in Detroit and is 1-8 in this arena. Detroit (6-2) won for the 15th time in a row in its home building and fifth consecutive time overall.
The Wave maintained more possession and outshot the Ignition 37-21, but Danny Waltman, the league's Goalkeeper of the Month in January, again made life tough on the Wave. He stopped 16 shots and many will end up on his personal highlight film.
It was 2-all at halftime in a physical contest; Nathan Sabich had the Wave's goal after a nice backheel leave from Travis MacKenzie.
After Vahid Assadpour gave Detroit a 4-2 lead, the Wave took advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity with a goal by Troy Dusosky. Giuliano Oliviero recorded his league-best 16th assist on the play.
Detroit closed out the game in the fourth, first on a goal by Worteh Sampson, his second of the game. Nic Djokic's first career goal made it 8-4 with 7:32 to go and Assadpour closed out the scoring.
The loss denied Keith Tozer his 600th regular season victory as a coach.
The Wave's next game is a home contest at 2 p.m. Sunday against Detroit. Wave legend Michael King will have his No. 13 retired in a pregame ceremony. The first 3,500 fans to attend the Feb. 15 game will receive a commemorative Michael King T-shirt courtesy of Aurora QuickCare. Tickets to the Feb. 15 game are available at any Ticketmaster outlet, or by calling the Wave office at 414-224-9283.
