Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE (April 16, 2008) -- Hanging tough on the road for 3½ quarters and leading with 9 minutes to go, the Milwaukee Wave couldn't hang on in Game 1 of their MISL Semifinal series at 1st Mariner Arena here Wednesday, falling 13-8.

Baltimore scored on two shootouts, a penalty kick and a fluke 3-pointer as Denison Cabral scored 10 points for the Blast, who took a 1-0 lead in the two-game series. Milwaukee hosts Game 2 at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Wave could be handicapped for that game. Milwaukee also played most of the second half without Marcio Leite, who had a goal and was playing a fantastic game until he went down with 7:28 to go in the third period. He favored his left ankle heavily and went to the locker room at the end of the quarter. Then with 1:24 to go and the Wave with a sixth attacker on, Troy Dusosky was issued a red card for an altercation with Baltimore goalkeeper Sagu. He will also have to miss Sunday's Game 2. Warren Ukah also left the bench at the end of the third quarter with an injury and did not return.

"I'm extremely proud of how our team played," said Wave Head Coach Keith Tozer. "I'm not happy with the result. We made some mistakes and they capitalized on them."

Greg Howes had two goals and an assist for the Wave; his last score put the Wave on top 8-6 with just 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Milwaukee dominated play in that period and for much of the fourth until things rapidly went south.

First, a ball distributed by goalkeeper Nick Vorberg under pressure was intercepted outside the yellow line by Cabral. His first, hard touch scooted by the off-balance Vorberg and into the net for a 3-pointer.

Just 20 seconds later, Vorberg came far outside the yellow line to try and cut off a pass that was headed for a streaking Baltimore player. He was called for an intentional handball and sent to the penalty box. Cabral took the shootout and just flipped the ball over Dusosky for his fourth goal. Ryan Pierce scored his first career goal on a restart play exactly two minutes later, and suddenly the Wave trailed 13-8. -more-

"If I say anything, I'll get fined," Tozer said. "I'll let the league watch the tape." Brett Wiesner scored the other goal for the Wave, giving them a 2-0 lead just 2:45 into the game on an assist from Howes. Prior to the game, the Blast recognized Michael King for his 22 years in indoor soccer. King, retiring at the end of this season, played in Baltimore in the 1992-93 season. Sunday's game is at 2 p.m. at U.S. Cellular Arena. Tickets are still available; call (414) 224-9283.
