February 28, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
Milwaukee ended a five game road trip Wednesday, and it's safe to say the road wasn't very kind, as the team went 2-3. The guys are happy to be back at home for the weekend where they've had plenty of success (10-1 at The U.S. Cellular Arena). They finish the MISL Regular Season with games on Saturday March 2nd against Syracuse, and Sunday March 3rd against Wichita, hoping to gain momentum heading into the MISL Playoffs.
The road trip began with the Wave's 16 game winning streak being snapped in a 17-9 loss to Missouri. The team rebounded by defeating the Chicago Soul 15-10. After that the Wave lost two in a row, the first 10-6 to the Baltimore Blast. The second a 9-8 loss to the Rochester Lancers, which officially knocked the Wave out of the competition for the MISL Regular Season Championship, and No. 1 overall seed in the MISL Playoffs. In the final game Milwaukee came away with a 12-8 victory over Syracuse.
The Wave came out firing in the first quarter with goals from #14 Nick Perera, #26 Ian Bennett, and #23 JP Rodriguez, putting the team up 6-0 early. Kenardo Forbes of Syracuse made it 6-2 with a goal, but #7 Luan Oliveira would add another goal for the Wave putting them up 8-2 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw only one goal scored, and it came from an unlikely source, Milwaukee's goalkeeper #2 Marcel Feenstra. That goal gave the Wave a 10-2 advantage at the half. The third quarter began with a goal from Syracuse's Slavisa Ubiparipovic, but Rodrigues would answer with his second goal of the game to give the Wave a 12-4 lead. Syracuse would try to rally adding two more goals, but it wasn't enough and the Wave won 12-8.
The Wave and Silver Knights now do battle once again. Besides Wednesday, the two teams met two other times this season. The Wave edged the Silver Knights 12-11 on a late goal by Marcio Leite in the first contest. The second game saw the Wave stage a comeback in the second half to win 13-10.
The Wave has a quick turnaround, as for they will take on the Wichita Wings Sunday at 3 pm at U.S. Cellular Arena. This will be the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams. The Wave has won the previous three, and now go for the sweep.
The Wave opened their season with a victory on the road over Wichita. #14 Nick Perera and #79 Hewerton helped the Wave jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Wichita's Geison would cut the lead to 4-2 heading into the second quarter. The second saw only one goal scored courtesy of Milwaukee's #10 Jonatan Santos, to make it 6-2 Wave after two quarters of play. Hewerton and #28 Jonathan Greenfield extended the Wave's advantage to 10-2. Geison scored another for Wichita, but the Wave received another goal from #21 Giuliano Oliviero, and the team came away with a 12-4 victory.
The second contest to place on New Year's Eve, and the Wave got their second win over Wichita on the season. In the first half Milwaukee got goals from #2 Tenzin Rampa, and Luan Oliveira to give them a 4-0 lead heading into half number two. Wichita would come back in the third with two goals to tie thing at 4-4. Oliveira would score another goal before the end of the third quarter 6-4. Minutes into the fourth quarter Wichita tied things at 6-6. However, three point goals by the Wave's Jonathan Greenfield and #25 Israel Sesay pushed the Wave in fronty 12-6, and that would be the way things would end.
The third meeting the Wave would use a late goal to defeat the Wings 12-10. The Wave had an early 6-0 lead at half with goals from Hewerton, Nick Perera, and Luan Oliveira. Wichita's Kevin Ten Eyck scored at the beginning of the third, but Perera and Hewerton added their second goals of the game to put the Wave up 10-2. Wichita would then go on to score eight unanswered points, and things were all square at ten. Later Hewerton completed his hat trick, proving to be the game winning goal for the Wave.
No matter the results Milwaukee has clinched the No. 2 seed in the MISL playoffs and will face the Missouri Comets (who clinched the 3rd seed with an 8-6 overtime win over Chicago) on Sunday, March 10th at 3 p.m. Fans can purchase $19 premier level tickets for $7 for the game.
