Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Familiar and Rare

The Black Hawks play more home games against the Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2017/18 than any other single opponent. Waterloo only hosts the Green Bay Gamblers at Young Arena once this season. Both teams visit this weekend. Friday's meeting with Dubuque is part of the Dupaco Cowbell Cup series, the three-team eastern Iowa trophy challenge between the Hawks, Saints, and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. During recent weeks, the Fighting Saints have been one of the most prolific offensive teams in the USHL, scoring five goals or more in four of their last five games. Green Bay has been near the top of the Eastern Conference all season. Win or lose, Gamblers' games have generally been close; eight of 13 have been settled by one-goal margins.

A Little Time at Home

Waterloo's games at Young Arena on Friday and Saturday open a sequence in which three of five contests will be on home ice. During the first dozen games on this year's schedule, the Hawks were away nine times. With a 6-3 road start, Waterloo has more wins in opposing buildings than any other USHL club at this stage of the season. Last season, the Black Hawks were 16-12-2 on the road and 24-4-2 at home.

Moe Making a Mark

Goaltender Jared Moe is having a remarkable start to his junior hockey career. With a 4-3-0 record during his first seven appearances, the New Prague, Minnesota, native ranks second in the league for goals against average (1.44) and save percentage (94.6%). The only goalie ahead of him in those two categories is Filip Larsson of the Tri-City Storm. The two netminders matched up last weekend, each claiming a 1-0 shutout victory. Moe stopped 49 of 50 total shots which he faced during the weekend. He now has two shutouts this season; his first included 30 saves against the Dubuque Fighting Saints on October 13th.

Meditating on the Eastern Conference

The Black Hawks are just 1-3-0 during games against opponents from the USHL Eastern Conference. Waterloo will have many opportunities to improve on that mark during the coming weeks. Beginning Friday, the Hawks play the first of seven consecutive games against teams from the East. The stretch includes two apiece versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Waterloo's next game against a Western Conference opponent won't be until December 8th versus the Fargo Force.

Weekly Recap

Jackson Cates scored on a first period power play last Friday. It proved to be the only goal during a road win against the Tri-City Storm. Jared Moe made 25 saves in the shutout. In an instant rematch the following night, the Hawks were defeated by the same score; Moe turned aside 24 shots.
