Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Green Bay Gamblers pulled ahead in the Clark Cup Championship series for 24 hours with a 3-1 victory over Waterloo Friday. Sam Herr and Kyle Novak each recorded a goal and an assist in the contest. Battling to stay alive in the best-of-five series, the Hawks recovered for a 5-3 win the next night. Jamie Hill scored three times and Taylor Cammarata contributed a goal and two assists.
Notable Performances
Jamie Hill's hat trick Saturday was just the tenth in junior-era Black Hawks playoff history. The last Waterloo skater to record three goals in one postseason game was Joel Hanson in 2003 versus the Des Moines Buccaneers. Stephon Williams made 18 saves during the game for his tenth playoff win. That gives him the franchise record for victories in one postseason. With one more win, Williams would equal Matt DiGirolamo, who owns the career mark of eleven over two seasons.
Power Play Breakthrough
The Black Hawks were held without a goal during their first ten power play opportunities in the Clark Cup Finals. Jamie Hill changed the trend late in the first period Saturday, then scored the game-winner in the third period on another advantage. Now 2/15 in the series and 10/60 in the playoffs, Waterloo's 16.7% success rate ranks fourth among teams reaching the postseason. The Hawks were 2/6 versus the Tri-City Storm, 1/13 against the Omaha Lancers, and 5/26 while taking on the Lincoln Stars.
McCoshen Makes Mark
Ian McCoshen hit the net for his fourth playoff goal Saturday. The defenseman has been a valuable postseason contributor, while putting just 15 shots on net. His resulting 26.7% shooting percentage ranks second on the team, behind only Tyler Zepeda (28.6%). McCoshen, who played over 30 minutes in each weekend game, is cumulatively +6 in the playoffs. The Black Hawks are 5-0 in playoffs games where McCoshen's plus-minus rating is +1 or better. He was +1 Saturday.
On the Road
The Hawks are hoping to become the first team to win Game Five of the Clark Cup Finals on the road since the Des Moines Buccaneers in 2006. The Bucs defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede 3-2. Like this set, the first four games of that series were split with each team winning once on the road. Current New York Islanders forward Kyle Okposo was the Clark Cup MVP, leading all scorers with six points in the series.
