Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Week in Review

The Black Hawks made a triumphant return from Christmas break, beginning with a 4-2 victory last Wednesday visiting the Sioux City Musketeers. Cal Petersen made 34 saves in his USHL debut, while Tony Cameranesi and Jamie Hill each recorded a goal and an assist. Saturday, the Hawks topped the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 5-3 at home. Cameranesi, Hill, and Mitch Witek each contributed multiple points. The Hawks scored first and did not trail at any point in either game.

Cameranesi Times Two

Tony Cameranesi's two goals for Waterloo Saturday represented the first multi-goal performance by a Black Hawk since Thanksgiving. He was also the Hawk who scored twice on that occasion, also against the RoughRiders. Taylor Cammarata leads Waterloo with three multi-goal games, while Mark Naclerio and Joe Rehkamp each have one. The Hawks have not lost a game this season when the same player scores twice.

Fast Starts

The Black Hawks have been ahead or tied at the end of the first period during twelve of their last 14 games. During the month of December, Waterloo outscored opponents by a combined total of 7-4 in the opening 20 minutes. The last time the Hawks allowed two first period goals was during an 8-4 win on the road against Team USA November 22nd. The Hawks have scored first in 17 of their 25 games, ranking third in the USHL.

Witek with Regularity

Defenseman Mitch Witek has four assists in his last three games. Saturday's victory versus Cedar Rapids was the Yale recruit's third two-assist game in 2011-2012. His eleven assists this season tie him for fifth among USHL blue-liners. Among Black Hawks players, the total is good enough for a second place tie. Witek's eleven points are more than any other Waterloo defenseman.

Eastern Bloc(k)

The Black Hawks are in the midst of four consecutive games against teams from the USHL Eastern Conference. With the schedule tilted that direction, Waterloo has more points versus the East (17) than in the Western Conference (13) so far. The Hawks will have an opportunity to close the gap as the season continues; 16 games on the remaining schedule are out of conference while 19 will be played in the West. Friday's matchup with the Indiana Ice completes the season series against that Eastern Conference opponent.
