Indiana Ice News Release
THREE WIN CLOSE-OUT: The Ice closed out 2011 with three wins in four days. Sean Kuraly's goal with just :14 seconds left in overtime lifted Indy to a 3-2 victory at Muskegon as Jon Gillies stopped 23 shots in net. The Ice defeated the Phantoms 5-2 on Friday at Pepsi Coliseum as Daniil Tarasov (2G) and Alexander Kuqali (2A) had two-point efforts and Gillies turned back 25 between the pipes. Gillies closed out the weekend with his second shutout of the year (26 saves) in Indy's 3-0 win on Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse as Kuraly (G, A) and Robbie Baillargeon (2A) led the offense with two points in the win.
SHUTOUT KING: With Saturday's blanking of Youngstown, goaltender Jon Gillies became the Ice's all-time shutout king with his fifth career shutout passing former Clark Cup champion netminder Brett Bennett who had four shutouts in 2008-09. Gillies is coming off another phenomenal week as the second-year goaltender went 3-0-0 with a 1.30 GAA and a .949 save percentage. He enters this weekend as the USHL leader in wins (16), minutes played (1450:18), saves (700) and save percentage (.926).
GOAL SLINGER: Forward Sean Kuraly extended his team season-high goal streak to five games with a nifty one-timer in the third period of Saturday's game. Kuraly also has eight goals to go along with two assists in his last seven games and is tied for second in the USHL with 18 markers this season. The franchise record for consecutive goal streak is six held by former forwards Paul Carey-Boston College and Max Cook-Miami.
CRAZY EIGHTS: The Ice enters 2012 with a 6-0-2 record in their last eight games as inter-conference play and special team's success has played a big part of it. Indiana has outscored their opponents 30-15 during the impressive run and has not lost in regulation since 12/4/11 versus Green Bay. Indy is 13-3-4 against their Eastern Conference foes and is first in the USHL on the power play (30.1%) and second on the penalty kill (86.3%). The team enters the weekend with a power play goal in eight consecutive games which equals their season-high and has killed off 20 of their opponents' last 21 power play attempts.
THE HOT LIST: Ryan Obuchowski has an assist in five straight games and is tied for second in the USHL among d-men in scoring (16 pts)...Daniil Tarasov is second in the USHL in scoring (37 pts) and posted his franchise best 12th multiple goal game of his career on Friday...Robbie Baillargeon has a point in seven of his last eight games (4G, 8A)...John Doherty has scored a goal in two straight games...Justin Bailey played for Indy this weekend off their affiliate list and scored a goal in his USHL debut.
