Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Weekend Recap

The Black Hawks were never behind or ahead by more than two goals during three weekend road games. The trip started with a 2-0 loss in Indianapolis as Ice goalie John Gillies turned away all 30 Waterloo shots. The visitors bounced back to win the rematch 4-3 the following night behind two goals from Joe Rehkamp and a goal and assist from Josh Nenadal. Sunday in Muskegon, Taylor Cammarata struck for the first tally and Tyler Zepeda added another in the second, but the Hawks could not overcome a pair of scores by Dakota Klecha, including the game-winner. Two standings points for the weekend were enough for Waterloo to maintain the top position in the USHL Western Conference.

Buzzer Beater

Joe Rehkamp's dramatic game-deciding goal versus the Indiana Ice Saturday represents the latest winning goal the Hawks have scored in regulation while being led by P.K. O'Handley. Rehkamp found the net with just :05 showing on the clock at Pepsi Coliseum, representing the only time in at least a decade that the Hawks have won a game in the final minute. However, the win was the second this season decided in the final three minutes of play; on October 7th, Mark Naclerio scored with 2:38 remaining, also leading to a 4-3 result.

Trying to Ditch the Dry Spell

The Black Hawks did not convert any of their 14 power play chances during the weekend road trip. For the season, the club is now 4-for-45, and their 8.9% conversion rate is tied for 15th in the USHL. In spite of the slow start, history is on the Hawks' side. Waterloo has finished with one of the league's top three power plays each of the last four years, pacing the circuit twice (2008-2009 and 2009-2010) in that time.

Plugging Gaps

Beginning Saturday, Waterloo will be missing some key members of their squad. Four players - Ian McCoshen, Tony Cameranesi, Vince Hinostroza, and A.J. Michaelson will all be skating at the World Junior A Challenge in British Columbia. The Hawks will test several affiliate players to fill the vacancies in the lineup. Waterloo will also be without associate head coach Shane Fukushima and Trainer Todd Klein during the event.

One Chance

When the Hawks have had a week to prepare for one game, they have used the opportunity well. During their last four regularly scheduled single-game weeks, Waterloo is 3-0-1. This weekend, the Hawks only play on Saturday against the Green Bay Gamblers. Next week, Waterloo hosts the Chicago Steel for a single game.
