Split Decision

J.T. Brown surprised everyone when his goal 39 seconds into Saturday's game ended up with the puck in two pieces. The puck broke when it hit the back support bar of the goal. Officials determined the break occurred after the puck was entirely in the net, significant because USA Hockey rule 614(a) states the puck must be "...entirely across the goal line" to be a score. Had it hit the outer post or crossbar with only half deflecting in, it would have been ruled no goal, according to USHL Officiating Supervisor Scott Brand.

Special Teams Surprise

The Black Hawks entered last weekend with two goals in 16 power play chances over four games. Friday, Waterloo doubled their power play goal total with a two-for-nine night. Saturday, they nearly doubled it again, going three-for-six. From the start to the end of the weekend, Waterloo climbed from twelfth to fourth in USHL power play efficiency.

Motte Makes A Statement

C.J. Motte turned away 39 shots on goal in the Black Hawks 7-3 win against Fargo Saturday. The last time a Black Hawk goaltender made that many saves during a regular season game was Matt DiGirolamo's 39-save performance on November 17, 2007 during a 2-1 shootout win at Des Moines. Nineteen of Motte's saves Saturday were recorded during the second period.

Away to Indy

The Black Hawks play back-to-back road games against the same opponent for the first time this season, when they travel to visit the Indiana Ice. Three other two-game road weekends are on the schedule, against Team USA, Youngstown, and Fargo. The Hawks' last win at Indiana was January 12, 2008 (4-3 in a shootout).
