Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Smith Stars on Back-to-Back Nights
Goals by Craig Smith proved to be the difference for Waterloo in both wins over the weekend. Smith's unassisted goal at 17:50 of the second period Saturday in Chicago put Waterloo ahead 2-1 in what turned out to be a 3-1 victory. Against Cedar Rapids Sunday, a goal at 16:51 of the third kept the Hawks ahead when the Rough Riders rallied back later, preserving a 3-2 win. Smith had three goals and three assists during seven games in December. The last Black Hawk with game-winning goals in back-to-back games was Andy Bohmbach last season on March 10th in Chicago and March 18th versus Sioux City.
DiGirolamo Has Decision in Five Straight
Goaltender Matt DiGirolamo has been credited with the win or loss in the last five Black Hawks games, posting a 3-2 record. Besides the games last weekend, he earned a rare relief win on December 16th when Waterloo rallied to down Des Moines 7-3. In the span, his goals-against average is 2.37. DiGirolamo has stopped 122 of 133 shots.
O'Handley to Match Huskies Stat
Through New Years' weekend, P.K. O'Handley has 136 regular season wins as the Black Hawks head coach. His win total in seven seasons as the coach of the North Iowa Huskies was 140. O'Handley will surpass his numbers from North Iowa in less than five full seasons with Waterloo.
Tri-City Trouble
Since the 2003-04 Clark Cup finals, the Tri-City Storm have been tough on the Hawks. In nine regular season meetings over the last two years, Waterloo is 2-5-2 versus the Storm. The Black Hawks won the last match-up against Tri City 4-1 on February 11th last season at Young Arena.
