Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The story of the Waterloo Black Hawks season so far can be told by numbers.
1. The Hawks are 1st among penalty killing units in the USHL. In fact, Waterloo has allowed only 1 goal during the first 22 opposing powerplays. On Saturday against Ohio, the penalty killers were a perfect nine-for-nine. The Blue Jackets scored the only powerplay goal against the Hawks during the second game of the season on October 8th.
2. Through 2 weekends, the Hawks are in 2nd place in the USHL Eastern Division. Waterloo has five points by virtue of a 2-0-1 record. The Green Bay Gamblers hold a meager one-point advantage. During the same opening three-game-span last season, the Black Hawks were 2-1-0.
(Two of) 3. As in two of the 3 top goaltenders in the USHL wear Black Hawks jerseys. Matt DiGirolamo leads the USHL with a 1.00 goals-against-average while Ryan Rondeau is close behind at 1.48. DiGirolamo backstopped the team to their first win on the road, and Saturday Rondeau earned the first shutout of the season. Their combined GAA is a sparkling 1.33. Their combined save percentage is just as impressive at 94.2%.
4. Only 4 total goals have ended up in the Black Hawks net in the first three games. Only the defending Clark Cup champion Buccaneers are close to that number with six goals-against prior to Tuesday night. Waterloo will play Des Moines on Friday night. By comparison, the Hawks allowed nine goals in the opening three games last season.
5. Head Coach P.K. O'Handley is now the USHL's 5th-winningest coach. Waterloo's win on Saturday gave O'Handley 262 victories as a league coach. O'Handley is the only Black Hawks coach in the organization's modern era to win more than 100 regular season games.
Last Week: Sat 10/14 HAWKS 4, Ohio 0
This Week: Fri 10/20 @ Des Moines, 7:05

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As a show of support for patients and others touched by the disease, during Saturday's game against Omaha, Hawks coaches will wear pink ties, a number of players will take the ice with pink sticks, and the game officials will don pink jerseys. Those items will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. The game is sponsored by the Cedar Valley Medical Breast Care Center.
