Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
January 16, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Shuffled Schedules
Many United States Hockey League teams had to be flexible as a winter storm moved through the region last week. The Black Hawks and their two upcoming opponents this weekend were among the teams affected. The Hawks have to make-up a meeting with the Youngstown Phantoms originally scheduled for last Saturday. The Des Moines Buccaneers hosted Youngstown last Saturday and the Chicago Steel last Sunday; each game was one day later than originally scheduled. The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders could not play their only slated game last weekend, because the Sioux City Musketeers were unable to travel across the state on January 13th. In total, ten league games either need to be made-up or were played on a different date than originally scheduled. This weekend, Waterloo will visit Des Moines Friday (7 p.m.) and Cedar Rapids Saturday (7:05 p.m.).
Starring at the All-American Game
More than 40 draft-eligible NHL prospects appeared in USA Hockey's All-American Game on Monday in Plymouth, Michigan. The Black Hawks' John Mustard may have had the most memorable moment. Tied 4-4 in overtime, Mustard fired home the game-winning goal on a partial breakaway. It was an appropriate finish; Mustard leads the Black Hawks and is tied for third in the USHL with four game-winning goals this season.
Adding Assists
Third-year Hawks forward Connor Brown assisted on a goal by Myles Hilman on Saturday against the Chicago Steel. It was Brown's 18th point already this season, tying his total from 2022/23. Most of his scoring has come in the form of assists. With 17 successful setups, he ranks third on the team. Brown has notched 60 career points (21 goals, 39 assists) in 153 regular season games as a Black Hawk.
High Percentage for Hilman
Waterloo Captain Myles Hilman scored twice last Saturday. It was his third multigoal game since Christmas. Hilman now has 10 goals on 48 shots this season for a scoring percentage of 20.8, which leads the team. Last season, Hilman scored on 17 of his 109 shots (15.6 percent), which placed third among the 2022/23 roster.
Recent Games
Jakub Altrichter scored less than a minute into overtime to lift the Black Hawks past the Chicago Steel 5-4 on Saturday. It was his second goal of the game. Myles Hilman also scored a pair of Waterloo goals and Gavyn Thoreson found the net. The Black Hawks never trailed, although Chicago did rally from two separate two-goal deficits. Waterloo's 43 shots on goal were a new season high. The Hawks played Chicago on Saturday, rather than the originally scheduled Youngstown Phantoms. The postponed game against Youngstown has not yet been rescheduled.
