Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
An Unlikely Itinerary
The drive between hockey arenas in Sioux City and Sioux Falls is approximately 86 miles. Waterloo will travel to both destinations during the days ahead, visiting the Musketeers Friday at 7:05 p.m., then going north to meet the Stampede in a game slated for 6:05 p.m. Saturday. Surprisingly, the Black Hawks have not visited Sioux City and Sioux Falls during the same weekend since October of 2018. Back then, Waterloo's trip began in Sioux Falls with a 6-5 overtime loss, despite a natural hat trick by Emil Ohrvall. A 4-2 recovery the next night versus the Musketeers included Matej Blumel's shorthanded game-winning goal.
A Little Adversity
The Black Hawks faced a 1-0 deficit during each of their first three games. In the season-opener against Fargo, the Force stretched the margin as far as 4-0. Last Friday in Dubuque, the Fighting Saints' 1-0 edge held for just 15 seconds before Connor Brown tied the score. At this early stage of the season, the Hawks join the Chicago Steel and Omaha Lancers as the only teams to not score first in any of their games. In 2022/23, Waterloo won 28 of the 32 games in which they jumped in front 1-0.
Providing Assistance
Gavin Lindberg leads the Black Hawks with three assists through three games. In fact, he is the only Waterloo player who currently has multiple assists. Each of those setups has come on a goal by linemate Adam Zlnka. Last Friday in Dubuque, Lindberg and Zlnka linked up twice, delivering the Hawks from a two-goal deficit, on the way to a shootout victory. It was the second multi-assist night of the 19-year-old's USHL career. In 2022/23, Lindberg produced 19 assists, which placed ninth on the team.
Lone Shootout
Gavyn Thoreson and John Mustard scored in last Friday's shootout. So far in 2023/24, the matchup with the Fighting Saints is the only USHL game which has required a tie-breaker at the end of overtime. Last season, the Hawks were one of the last league teams to participate in a shootout, not seeing such a situation until a 5-4 win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on December 10th. The Hawks won all four of their shootouts in 2022/23. In fact, they have now prevailed in seven straight, starting with a 3-2 result against the Omaha Lancers on January 28, 2022. Waterloo's last shootout loss was in Omaha - 2-1 - on October 15, 2021.
Recent Games
Adam Zlnka had a pair of goals during a 5-4 shootout win last Friday at Dubuque. Connor Brown produced a goal and an assist. The night also included Matthew Frost's first USHL goal, plus 19 saves by goaltender Jack Spicer. Waterloo prevailed in the three-round shootout 2-1.
