Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Double with Des Moines
The Black Hawks have already met the Des Moines Buccaneers four times this season; the in-state rivals clash on back-to-back nights this weekend. The series starts at 7 o'clock Friday in Buccaneer Arena. Saturday's meeting at Young Arena starts at 6:05 p.m. The team playing on home ice has won each game to date. Des Moines topped the Hawks 4-1 in the most recent matchup on December 16th. The games count toward the Dupaco Cowbell Cup series, with Waterloo and Des Moines both hoping to make up ground on the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Dubuque Fighting Saints.
Midway
Saturday's game will be the 31st of 62 on Waterloo's schedule this season. The Hawks have already surpassed their mid-season win total from 2021/22, when the club was 15-14-2. John Waldron's 21 points at that time made him the team's active scoring leader. Garrett Schifsky and Ben Robertson are already each at 21 points currently. As a team, Waterloo was credited with 84 goals through 31 games; this year, the Hawks are already at 108, with at least one goal by 23 different skaters.
Auction Proceeds
As the Black Hawks prepare to wear camouflage jerseys for Salute to Veterans Night Saturday, the team is also celebrating a very successful Hockey Fights Cancer Assist Night earlier this season. During last Friday's game, the Hawks presented the American Cancer Society with a ceremonial check for $14,040.26 raised during Waterloo's game on November 5th. The bulk of that contribution came from jersey auction proceeds. This Saturday's jerseys will be sold on behalf of the Miehe Veterans Transitional Home in Waterloo.
Side Trip to Plymouth
After the Hawks complete Saturday's home game, Garrett Schifsky, Aaron Pionk, and Jack Spicer will make their way to the BioSteel All-American Game in Plymouth, Michigan. All three will skate for Team White. Sam Rinzel participated in the showcase exhibition last year before being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Recent Games
The Black Hawks made the most of this season's most challenging weekend, winning three times including twice on the road. Jack Spicer was in goal for all three contests, making 80 total saves on the way to being named the USHL Goaltender of the Week. During last Friday's 4-2 win against the Sioux City Musketeers, Caden Brown and Gavin O'Connell each had a goal and an assist. In a road rematch the next night, Waterloo prevailed 4-3 via a shootout and thanks to Oliver Flynn's goal, which had forced overtime with 3:25 remaining. Sunday against the Tri-City Storm, Gennadi Chaly scored twice in a 7-2 contest.
Friday, January 6 Sioux City 2, BLACK HAWKS 4
Saturday, January 7 BLACK HAWKS 4, Sioux City 3 (SO)
