Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Stand Alone Sioux Falls

This Saturday's 6:05 p.m. game between the Hawks and the Sioux Falls Stampede is the final instance where Waterloo is scheduled for a single-game week during the 2022/23 season. It will be the third game during an eight-game homestand, which has opened 1-1-0. Back on October 21st, Waterloo topped Sioux Falls 5-2 in South Dakota. Since then, the Stampede are 1-1-1 and earned their first home win on Sunday during a 6-3 contest against the Omaha Lancers. Between now and Saturday, Sioux Falls plays on the road Wednesday against Sioux City, then hosts the Musketeers on Friday prior to coming to Young Arena.

Third Period Team

If third periods were all that counted, the Black Hawks' record would be 6-1-3. The only instance where Waterloo was outscored in the final 20 minutes of a game was at Cedar Rapids (2-1) on October 15th. In aggregate, the Hawks have an 18-8 scoring advantage in the final frame, and the +10 differential against their opponents is the best in the USHL. The Hawk's 18 third period goals stand second only to Muskegon (19).

Robertson Climbs in the Rankings

Defenseman Ben Robertson assisted on three of the Black Hawks' five goals against Des Moines on Sunday. The strong showing vaulted him to seven points - all assists - in 2022/23. Robertson's point total currently ties for third among league defenseman, as well as third among Waterloo players at all positions. After recording one assist in 22 total appearances for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program and the Omaha Lancers, Robertson now has 22 points (two goals, 20 assists) in 45 career regular season Waterloo games.

Assisting from a Distance

Goaltender Jack Spicer earned an assist on a first period goal by Garrett Schifsky on Sunday. It came 366 days after the last point by a Hawks goaltender: Jack Williams had an assist during a 3-1 road victory against the Fargo Force on October 29, 2021. Emmett Croteau also had an assist last October (against the Lincoln Stars on October 23rd). The last Hawks goalie with multiple assists during the same season was Logan Stein in 2019/20. Jeff Jakaitis was the most recent to produce three assists during one schedule back in 2002/03.

Recent Games

The Hawks allowed a season-high five goals on Saturday versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The 5-2 loss included four Dubuque scores in the second period. Waterloo's offense came from Gavin Lindberg and Patrick Geary. Sunday's game against the Des Moines Buccaneers represented a solid rebound. Five different Hawks players scored, and Waterloo did not trail once Garrett Schifsky notched the first goal of the contest at the seven-minute mark of the first period. Jack Spicer made 20 saves for the victory.
