Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
High Scorers and Stingy Defenders
This weekend, the Black Hawks travel to meet two opponents who have found different ways to win during 2021/22. Friday at Mystique Ice Center, Waterloo visits the high-flying Dubuque Fighting Saints (21-10-5) at 7:05 p.m. Dubuque is the USHL's leading offensive team, averaging 4.3 goals per game. The Saints are paced by veteran Stephen Halliday, who owns a league-high 56 points (21 goals, 35 assists). Then Saturday at 6:05 p.m., the Hawks collide with the Sioux City Musketeers (20-11-4) at Tyson Events Center. Sioux City is one of three USHL clubs allowing fewer than three goals per game (2.9) and has held opponents to the second-lowest average shot total (25.7) in the league.
Back on the Road
This weekend's games are Waterloo's first on the road since a 5-4 loss at Lincoln on December 21st. The Hawks are 6-9-1 in true road contests during 2021/22. Waterloo was 3-1-1 during a season-long five game homestand which concluded at Young Arena last Saturday.
Schifsky Among Goal Leaders
Garrett Schifsky scored goals in each game last weekend against the Fargo Force, boosting his season total up to 20 in 35 appearances. He is one of just eight players in the USHL with 20 goals at this point in the season and the only one skating for a team in the Western Conference. Schifsky has scored in seven of Waterloo's last eight games. Adam Fantilli of the Chicago Steel currently leads the league with 24 goals.
Hawks Persevere Through Absences
Captain Mason Reiners and 20-year-old forward Mason McCormick were each injured during a December 28th game versus Sioux City. Neither has played since that night, yet the Hawks have still managed to earn a 6-5-1 record in the meantime. For good measure, veteran John Waldron was hurt on January 14th during a game in Des Moines. Together, Reiners, McCormick, and Waldron represent 345 games worth of regular season junior hockey experience in either the USHL or North American Hockey League. Reiners and McCormick could return to the Black Hawks' lineup before the end of February.
Recent Games
The Hawks earned three of four possible standings points from a weekend set versus the Fargo Force. Friday, Waterloo led the whole way, thanks to a goal by new forward Daniel Sambuco less than five minutes into the contest. Owen Baker assisted on that goal and also scored during the 4-2 result. Saturday, the Hawks trailed most of the night but recovered in the third period thanks to goals from Tyler Kostelecky and Garrett Schifsky. With less than two minutes left in regulation, Schifsky forced overtime; Fargo won the game 3-2 in extra time.
