Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Getting Results

The Black Hawks and their weekend opponents can all brag about varying degrees of recent success. Waterloo has won three consecutive games, all against Western Conference opponents. The run comes after the Hawks had started the year 0-3-1 versus teams from the West. Friday, Waterloo hosts the Dubuque Fighting Saints (6-0-4) at 7:05 p.m. The Saints are the only USHL team that remains unbeaten in regulation this year; the Hawks' 4-3 win against Dubuque on October 16th came in overtime. Then Saturday at 6:05 p.m., Waterloo goes on the road to meet the Sioux Falls Stampede (4-5-0) for the first time in 2021/22. The Stampede have won three straight, while holding opponents to 24 shots on goal or fewer in each of those games.

Among the Leaders

Tyler Kostelecky vaulted among the United States Hockey League's top offensive players in several categories thanks to strong performances in recent Black Hawks games. He currently leads the league with a 53.8 percent shooting percentage (seven goals on 13 shots). Kostelecky is also tied for fourth in both goals and plus/minus differential (+9). His 11 points tie for 16th, and 10 of those points have come in the last five games.

Shorthanded, Home & Away

At this early stage of the season, the Black Hawks have had considerably more success killing opposing power plays as the road team than at home. Waterloo's penalty killing percentage as the away club is 85 percent, versus 66.7 in the other circumstance. The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (80% / 57.9%) and Sioux City Musketeers (88.2 % / 75%) are the only other clubs to be at least 10 percentage points better on the penalty kill as the visiting team.

October Recap

The Hawks earned a 5-3-1 mark in October, led by Tyler Kostelecky with seven goals and 11 points. Three of Waterloo's eight games went to overtime, including 4-3 victories over the Dubuque Fighting Saints (10/16) and Fargo Force (10/30). On the other end of the spectrum, the Hawks celebrated a season-high four-goal winning margin and eight total goals during an 8-4 result against the Lincoln Stars October 23rd.

Recent Games

The Black Hawks produced a 3-1victory on Friday, then followed up with a 4-3 overtime result Saturday, both on the road against the Fargo Force. In Friday's game, Jack Williams made 32 saves and Waterloo scored three unanswered goals to swing past Fargo, after the Force had gone ahead midway through the first period. Saturday, Tyler Kostelecky broke a 2-2 tie in the second period, then notched the winner as the teams were tied 3-3 in overtime. Patrick Geary and Garrett Schifsky were responsible for Waterloo's other goals that night.
