Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - The Salvation Army of Waterloo-Cedar Falls will be the focus of the $16.50 Campaign, presented by Slumberland Furniture, the Waterloo Black Hawks, and 1650 "The Fan" KCNZ-AM during November, following the kickoff of The Salvation Army's annual Red Kettle Campaign at Young Arena this Friday during the Hawks' game versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
"With our commitment to bringing awareness to this year's Red Kettle Campaign, it only made sense to continue highlighting The Salvation Army throughout November," said Joe Greene, Black Hawks president of business operations. "The Salvation Army is at work long before, and long after, the holidays, and we look forward to helping them achieve their goals at this critical time."
The $16.50 Campaign originated in the fall of 2019 as a way to channel the charitable impulses of Black Hawks fans and 1650-AM listeners toward worthwhile causes in northeast Iowa. Each month during the hockey season, one organization or cause is spotlighted. Fans are encouraged to make a manageable contribution of $16.50, with the goal that 100 people will answer that call and together provide a bigger contribution than any of them could make individually. To make a donation before or after Friday's Red Kettle Kickoff event, visit waterlooblackhawks.com/1650.
Nearly 33 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through an array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. Locally, The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls anticipates providing assistance to approximately 1,200 Cedar Valley residents during the Christmas season alone through their local toy distribution and holiday meal program.
The November 5th game will feature several events or activities to highlight the Red Kettle Campaign, including "kettle curling" at intermission, information about The Salvation Army's activities, and a rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner by Salvation Army Majors Martin and Shannon Thies before puck drop.
