Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Familiar Surroundings
This week, the Hawks travel to three buildings they have recently visited. Thursday's game (7:05 p.m.) at Viaero Center in Kearney, Nebraska, will be the third meeting there between Waterloo and the Tri-City Storm. The teams each picked up a victory on Tri-City's home ice during the weekend or March 5th and 6th. Waterloo will play the Lincoln Stars at the Ice Box for the second consecutive Friday (7:05 p.m.) after a 7-3 loss last weekend. Then Saturday (6 p.m.), the Hawks travel to Des Moines' Buccaneer Arena; the most recent visit resulted in an 8-1 Bucs win on February 20th.
Two is Better than Three
Jacob Jeannette scored twice during Saturday's win versus the Lincoln Stars, and Max Sasson produced two goals Sunday when the Hawks topped the Tri-City Storm. Waterloo players have celebrated 13 multigoal performances during the 2020/21 season. The Hawks are 8-2-1 in those games (on two occasions, two Black Hawks have both scored twice in the same game). Coincidentally, Waterloo is 0-1-1 in games when a Hawks player has notched a hat trick.
Rookie Goalies
Emmett Croteau ranks favorably among a small class of USHL rookie goalies. His goals-against average (3.37) and win total (five) both stand second only to Jack Stark of the Chicago Steel. Croteau and Stark each have a .893 save percentage. The USHL classifies this season's rookies as players who were born after September 15, 2002, with less than 10 games of USHL experience in any prior season.
Sasson Shorties
Max Sasson scored shorthanded goals on Friday against Lincoln and Sunday versus Tri-City. Those goals give him a league-high four shorthanded goals in 37 appearances this season. Last season, no individual USHL player reached that threshold while league clubs all played between 47 and 50 games during an abbreviated schedule. The last Black Hawk before Sasson to score four shorties in a season was Matej Blumel in 2018/19 (58 games played). Jack Drury had five a year earlier in 2017/18 (56 games played).
Weekly Recap
The Black Hawks played four games in six days last week with a 2-2-0 record. A Tuesday night comeback fell short in a 4-3 result against the Omaha Lancers last Tuesday, then the Lincoln Stars pulled away to defeat Waterloo 7-3 on Friday at the Ice Box. The Hawks recovered on home ice to top Lincoln Saturday, 6-2, behind the strength of three goals in the first period, then three more in the third. On Sunday, a second period outburst sent Waterloo to a 5-2 win over the Tri-City Storm.
