Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

March 8, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Hawks vs. Huskers

Between now and this time next week, Waterloo will play four games, all against opponents from Nebraska. Tuesday, the Black Hawks conclude their regular season series with the Omaha Lancers during a 7:05 p.m. game at Young Arena. Both previous times the teams have played in Waterloo, the games have gone to overtime. Friday and Saturday, the Hawks meet the Lincoln Stars for a home-and-home series beginning in Lincoln with a 7:05 p.m. tilt, followed by a 6:05 contest on Commercial Street. Waterloo defeated Lincoln 5-2 on December 28th in the only other head-to-head matchup. The weekend concludes with a 3:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon home game versus the Tri-City Storm; in four meetings between the clubs to date, each has two wins.

30 x 3

The Black Hawks have produced at least 30 shots on goal in each of their last three games. It is the first time Waterloo has reached that threshold in three consecutive contests this season. The Hawks are in the middle of the pack (seventh among 14 teams) with 28.3 shots per game this season after leading the USHL with 35.5 per night during 2019/20. Last weekend's totals of 34 and 35 were particularly notable, because the Tri-City Storm allow their opponents a league-low 24.6 shots per game.

20 to Go

The Hawks have 20 games left on this season's 54-game schedule. The remaining slate skews slight toward being on home ice (11 games, versus nine away). Half of those 20 games are against either the Lincoln Stars or Des Moines Buccaneers (five apiece). At this stage of the schedule, Owen Ozar, Kyler Kleven, and Jonah Copre are the last Waterloo skaters who have appeared in every game.

Century Mark

The Black Hawks produced their 100th goal of the season during Saturday's game versus the Tri-City Storm. No individual player has recorded more than 10. As a group, Waterloo defensemen have accounted for 20 goals (last year, they were responsible for just 9.5 percent of the team total). The count is divided up with 75 at even-strength, 21 on the power play, and four shorthanded. The second period is Waterloo's most prolific, with 39 goals (25 in the first, 34 in the third, and two in overtime).

Weekly Recap

The Hawks trailed for much of the third period on Friday before Alex Gaffney's late game-tying goal forced overtime against the Tri-City Storm. Owen Ozar then produced the decisive score for the Hawks, propelling the visitors to a 3-2 win. In a Saturday rematch, the Storm pulled away to a 5-0 lead before eventually winning 5-2. Waterloo's goals came from Matt Argentina and Ethan Szmagaj.
