Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Saving the Sioux City Matchups
The Black Hawks and the Sioux City Musketeers are the last USHL teams within the same conference that have not met this season. Waterloo visits Sioux City on Friday and Saturday, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7:05 p.m. each night. This will be the 48th consecutive season that the Hawks and Musketeers have played, dating back to when both teams were skating with "senior" aged players. Ten of Sioux City's 16 wins have been earned at Tyson Events Center. Meanwhile, the Hawks are 16-5-2 as the visiting team this year.
Back to the West
Friday's Waterloo game against the Musketeers will be the Hawks' first against a Western Conference opponent since a 5-2 victory versus the Fargo Force on February 8th. During seven consecutive games against non-conference opponents, Waterloo went 3-4-0. All three wins were on the road; all four losses were at home. Seven of the Hawks' next eight games will be against Western foes.
Three Familiar Faces
Last weekend, Connor Caponi, Teddy Lagerback, and Joey Strada all returned to the Waterloo lineup (in one sense or another), and each scored a goal. Caponi had been sidelined by injury since mid-January; he found the net in his first game back Friday against USA Hockey's National Team Development Program Under 17s. Strada also scored Friday after being acquired from the Des Moines Buccaneers in a trade; the 20-year-old had played for Waterloo during the 2016 exhibition schedule. Lagerback was an affiliate last season and skated in five 2018/19 regular season games. After playing for Minnetonka High School in Minnesota this season, Lagerback scored Saturday against the Youngstown Phantoms.
February Notes and Numbers
The Hawks' weekend wins pushed the team's February record to 5-5-0, and allowed Waterloo to carry a four point Western Conference lead into March. Griffin Ness paced the Hawks with five goals and 11 points. Ness, Luke Bast, and Aaron Bohlinger each recorded six assists. Matthew Argentina posted a club-best +5 plus/minus differential.
Weekly Recap
Waterloo celebrated a pair of 5-1 victories during a swing through Michigan and Ohio over the weekend. Facing USA Hockey's National Team Development Program Under 17s on Friday, Gabriel Carriere made 28 saves and Connor Caponi scored the eventual game-winning goal. Moving on to Youngstown, the Hawks jumped ahead of the Phantoms thanks to first period goals by Matthew Argentina, Kyle Haskins, and Wyatt Schingeothe. Argentina was the only player with a goal in both games.
