Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Only Visits by Youngstown, Chicago
The Youngstown Phantoms and Chicago Steel make their lone trips of the season to Waterloo on Friday and Saturday respectively for 7:05 p.m. games. The tilt with Youngstown will mark the first time the Black Hawks have seen the Phantoms since winning both games during the 2018/19 regular season series. In five of the last six years, one team or the other has swept the two annual head-to-head matchups. Meanwhile, Saturday's game against Chicago completes this winter's two-game schedule. The Steel topped the Hawks 5-3 on November 2nd at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The league leaders from Chicago are currently riding a six-game winning streak.
Across the Scoring Spectrum
The Chicago Steel are the USHL's highest-scoring team in 2019/20 at 4.8 goals per night. The Youngstown Phantoms rank 15th among the league's 16 clubs with 2.9 on average. Chicago will be visiting Young Arena coming off their third ten-goal (or more) performance of the season, a 10-3 Sunday result against USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Meanwhile, Youngstown exceeded their typical scoring figure last weekend during 3-1 and 5-4 victories over the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
40-Point Milestone
Xander Lamppa (13 goals, 28 assists) and Griffin Ness (17 goals, 23 assists) each reached the 40-point threshold last weekend. They are among 19 USHL players who have done so this season. There were four Black Hawks who earned 40 or more points last season: Emil Ohrvall (63), Matej Blumel (60), Vladislav Firstov (58), and Hank Sorensen (45). In 2018/19, Ness had 33 points, while Lamppa notched 26.
Triple-Digit Appearances
If Kyle Haskins is on the ice Friday, it will be the 100th USHL regular season game of his career. He will join teammates Joe Cassetti (163), Brehdan Engum (110), Ethan Szmagaj (108), Ryder Rolston (105), Jacob Bengtsson (102), Wyatt Schingoethe (102), Xander Lamppa (100), and Griffin Ness (100) at the century mark. The Omaha Lancers are the only other club with eight active 100-game players.
Weekly Recap
The second period was a turning point in all three Black Hawks games last week. On Tuesday, Waterloo led the Dubuque Fighting Saints 2-1 going into the second. However, Thomas Middleton's second goal of the night tied the score, with Dubuque ultimately prevailing 3-2. Friday, the Hawks and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders were scoreless coming out of the first intermission at Young Arena, but the visitors scored four times in the middle frame and went on to defeat Waterloo, 5-2. In a road rematch the next night, the Black Hawks used three second period goals to establish a lead, then hung on for a 4-3 win.
