Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Formidable Visitors
Two notable road teams call at Young Arena this weekend. Friday, the Fargo Force visit the Black Hawks. The defending Clark Cup champions won four of their six road games last spring during the 2018 playoffs, including a win against Waterloo. The Force are also one of only four teams to have walked away from Young Arena with a victory during the current 2018/19 schedule. Waterloo and Fargo split a pair of matchups in late October; both nights ended with 4-3 final scores. Saturday's visitors have more road wins than any other club this winter. The Muskegon Lumberjacks are 14-2-2 when taking the ice as the visitors. The Lumberjacks currently lead the Eastern Conference standings. They won during their only visit to Young Arena in 2017/18, 4-1 on January 20th. Both games this weekend begin at 7:05 p.m.
20-Goal Scorers
At the conclusion of games last weekend, there were five 20-goal scorers in the United States Hockey League. Three of them are expected to be on the ice at Young Arena Friday. Waterloo top scorer Matej Blumel has the USHL's second-highest goal count, with 23 in 34 games. Emil Ohrvall reached the 20-goal mark last Thursday with his hat trick versus the Omaha Lancers. Ben Meyers of the Fargo Force is the current USHL goals leader with 25. He scored two of those against the Hawks in October. Two of Blumel's goals were against Fargo.
January Results
The Black Hawks blasted out of January with a 6-3-0 record, outscoring their opponents 33-23. Matej Blumel led Waterloo with 13 points and eight goals during the month. He also tied Mason Palmer and Ethan Szmagaj for the team's top assist count with five. Palmer had a team-best +10 plus/minus differential during a memorable month which included his commitment to Northern Michigan University. In net, both Jared Moe and Logan Stein earned a United States Hockey League Goaltender of the Week award.
A Big Number
On January 26th, Waterloo's 3-1 win versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders attracted 3,500 fans to Young Arena. It was the largest crowd for a regular season Black Hawks home game since March 8, 2013. Coincidentally, Waterloo also faced the RoughRiders on that close, low-scoring occasion. Cedar Rapids came out on top in the 2013 meeting, 2-1.
Weekly Recap
The Hawks were a combined 4-for-11 on the power play during a pair of home wins. Thursday against the Omaha Lancers, Emil Ohrvall completed a hat trick during a power play in a 5-1 result. Saturday versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, Xander Lamppa scored the game-winner on the advantage. Waterloo won 3-1.
