Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

NHL Nicknames Weekend

The Black Hawks and both of their opponents this weekend all share nicknames with National Hockey League clubs. Friday, Waterloo visits the Lincoln (not Dallas) Stars at the Ice Box. The Hawks scored a 2018/19 league-high five power play goals during a 6-3 win against Lincoln on November 17th. Emil Ohrvall produced a hat trick that night. Then this Saturday, Waterloo travels to take on the Madison (not Washington) Capitols. Last weekend, the Hawks defeated Madison, 6-2. Waterloo is currently 7-4-2 as the road team, with a Western Conference-leading 45 goals during away games.

Alberta Tonight

This evening in Bonnyville, Alberta, the United States meets Czech Republic during the World Junior A Challenge. Black Hawks players are on both sides of the matchup. Griffin Ness has the lone American goal so far at the tournament; the U.S. lost their opener to Canada West, 2-1 on Sunday. The Czech also were on the downside of their first matchup, falling to Russia, 4-2 on Monday. Matej Blumel had a goal for his country. Coincidentally, the goals by both Ness and Blumel were shorthanded. Connor Caponi is also participating in the event for the U.S. Junior Select Team.

Climbing Among the Leaders

Jared Moe was in goal for both Black Hawks wins last weekend. The second-year netminder now has 31 wins during USHL regular season play. Moe started last weekend ranked ninth in victories during Waterloo's junior era (1979/80 to the present). Last weekend's wins moved him up to a tie for 5th, currently level with Jeff Melnechuk and Joe Grossman. He is five shy of C.J. Motte for fourth. Last weekend's results also helped him cut his 2018/19 goals-against average to under 3.00 while boosting his save percentage over 90 percent.

Penalty Killing Streak

Between the early third period amidst a loss to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on November 24th through the opening minutes of the third in Saturday's win against the RoughRiders, the Black Hawks killed 18 consecutive power plays. The sequence included a pair of shorthanded goals. Waterloo now has six shorties this season, tying for the league lead. For the season, the Hawks' penaltykill ranks 12th in the league at 78.9 percent.

Weekly Recap

Waterloo has now scored five goals or more in nine of 24 games this season after reaching that mark twice last weekend. Xander Lamppa and Vladislav Firstov each scored twice during a 6-2 win against the Madison Capitols. Emil Ohrvall had a goal and three assists Saturday, and five different Hawks hit the net in a 5-2 result against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
