Cup Contests
The Dupaco Cowbell Cup series continues when the Black Hawks meet the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for the first times this season on Thursday and Saturday. Waterloo leads the three-team competition, which also includes the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The RoughRiders are the defending Anderson Cup champions. They also play this Wednesday night versus the current Eastern Conference leaders, the Chicago Steel. Meanwhile, the Black Hawks are the only United States Hockey League team with Wednesday off.
Thanksgiving Trends
This will be the 20th consecutive season in which Waterloo has played a Thanksgiving home game and the 17th consecutive encounter with the RoughRiders. When including shootouts, ten Hawks/Riders matchups on Thanksgiving have been settled by one-goal margins. Following a streak of six consecutive Waterloo wins on the holiday from 2008 through 2013, Cedar Rapids has claimed the last two renewals. The current string of Thanksgiving games has eclipsed the previous run 18 straight Turkey Days with a Black Hawks home game, which extended from 1972 through 1989.
Doubling Up
Defenseman Mikey Anderson notched a pair of assists on Friday during Waterloo's 3-2 overtime victory against the Green Bay Gamblers. His effort included a power play setup on Nick Swaney's game-winning goal. The multipoint showing is the second by Anderson this season. Facing the Lincoln Stars on October 6th, the 17-year-old recorded a goal and two assists. Anderson had one multiple point result as a rookie during the 2015/16 regular season, then another during the 2016 Clark Cup Playoffs.
Second Thoughts
By both total scoring (19 goals) and scoring margin (+7), second periods are when the Black Hawks have been their best in 2016/17. The Hawks have only been outscored by the opposition in the middle frame on three occasions this season. During five of 17 games, Waterloo has recorded multiple second period goals, and the Hawks are unbeaten on those nights. Currently, Waterloo is the only team with an aggregate shots on goal count over 200 during the second period.
Weekly Recap
Garrett Wait and Mason Palmer recorded regulation goals Friday, then Nick Swaney fired in a game-winner in overtime, and the Black Hawks prevailed, 3-2, against the Green Bay Gamblers. Robbie Beydoun made 24 saves for his sixth win of the season. However, a slow start undid Waterloo the following night against the Fargo Force. The visitors scored three times in the opening period and prevailed, 4-0.
