Lots to Settle with Saints

With just 19 regular season games remaining, the Black Hawks play more than one quarter of their contests between now and the end of 2015/16 against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Two of the five matchups will be staged this weekend, beginning Friday when Waterloo travels to Mystique Ice Center. Saturday, the scene shifts to Young Arena. Friday's game represents the end of a five-game Dubuque home stand, during which the Saints are currently 3-0-1. Both teams have been strong on home ice: the Hawks have 26 standings points in 20 home games, while Dubuque has 27 in 19 contests. The Saints are also one of the United States Hockey League's best road teams, accumulating 28 bus points thus far.

Metcalf Makes New Start

Garrett Metcalf appeared in two of three weekend games for Waterloo and scored his first Black Hawks win Sunday. The 6'3" former Madison Capitols goalie made 21 stops during a 3-2 win against the Sioux City Musketeers. Facing the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Friday, Metcalf provided 27 saves in a 4-1 defeat. Including his time with the Caps and since the beginning of January, the Anaheim Ducks draft pick has stopped 91.7% of the shots he has faced.

Long Time Coming

Waterloo's third period comeback to defeat the Sioux City Musketeers, 3-2, on Sunday was a rare result. When trailing after two periods this season, the Hawks had been 0-15-2. Last season under the same circumstances, Waterloo went 0-24-2, making the Hawks the only USHL club without a third period comeback win in 2014/15. The last time it had happened was March 7, 2014. That game was played against the same opponent (Sioux City), with the same final score (3-2), with the same player assisting on the game-winning goal (Liam Pecararo) at almost the exact same time (16:24 on Sunday versus 16:45 during the 2014 meeting).

Charyszyn Makes Big Contribution

Kevin Charyszyn's second goal of the season was just what the Hawks needed to overcome the Sioux City Musketeers on Sunday. The forward scored early in the third to slice into Sioux City's 2-0 lead. He now has six points this season. His other goal this year was also recorded at a vital moment, boosting Waterloo past the Fargo Force, 4-3, with nine seconds remaining in regulation on December 11th.

Weekly Recap

Special teams success by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders upended the Black Hawks in a 4-1 road tilt Friday. Saturday, the Hawks were denied on 39 of 40 shots by the Lincoln Stars in a 2-1 defeat at home. Ben Newhouse scored in both games. Waterloo rebounded to top the Sioux City Musketeers, 3-2, on Sunday.
