February 24, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
One Win and In
A victory during any of three Black Hawks games this week will ensure that Waterloo finishes ahead of the four USHL Western Conference teams currently outside of playoffs position, thereby clinching a postseason berth. The Hawks begin the week at Young Arena seeking their fourth victory of the season versus the Lincoln Stars. On the road Friday, Waterloo collides with the Indiana Ice for the first time in 2013/14, then the club travels to meet the Muskegon Lumberjacks Saturday. The two games are the only ones the Hawks play on the road against those two opponents this winter. Three-game weeks will become the norm for Waterloo; although the Hawks rank second in the Western standings, their 44 games played are the fewest in the conference.
Bounce-Back Games
The Hawks were shutout for the first time in 2013/14 on Saturday, 5-0, by the Omaha Lancers. It was only the 13th time during 288 regular season games since the beginning of the 2009/10 season that Waterloo has been held scoreless. Coming back with a victory the next time out has not generally been easy; the Hawks are 5-6-1 in the first game after being blanked. The last time Waterloo was shutout by the Lancers, the Hawks responded with a 10-0 victory over the Chicago Steel (March 23, 2011). The last time the Hawks faced the Lincoln Stars immediately after a shutout, Waterloo won the contest, 5-3 (October 9, 2010).
A Shutout to Remember
Cameron Johnson stopped 18 shots on goal to help the Black Hawks defeat the Fargo Force 7-0 on Friday. With the decision, he becomes the third Waterloo goalie with a shutout this season and the 24th during the Hawks' junior era. Only two other goalies in team history have earned a "goose egg" against their former teams, and by uncanny coincidence, all three were by the same 7-0 score. Steve Racine did it with 28 saves versus the Lincoln Stars on November 11, 2009, and Stephon Williams whitewashed the Sioux Falls Stampede with 23 stops on March 23, 2012.
A Shorthanded Goal to Remember
Alec McCrea scored his first career shorthanded goal on Friday against the Fargo Force. It was the first shorthanded goal by a Waterloo defenseman since James Hansen potted one against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on November 24, 2011. Adding two assists Friday, McCrea had a career-best three points.
Weekly Recap
Seven different Black Hawks scored as Waterloo won on the road for the 16th time this season, topping the Fargo Force 7-0 on Friday. However, all 30 Hawks shots were turned away in Omaha by Hayden Hawkey the next night, and the Lancers prevailed 5-0.
