Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
October 29, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Second Time Around
In six weeks of hockey, the Waterloo Black Hawks have not faced the same opponent twice. That changes Wednesday, when the Hawks visit the Tri-City Storm for a second time. The game will be a rematch of an October 12th contest, which Waterloo won in a shootout, 3-2. After the Hawks started the schedule with games against nine different opponents, Wednesday's tilt will begin to reverse the trend; it is the start of six straight versus teams Waterloo has already met. That includes Saturday's home matchup with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, who topped the Hawks, 3-2, at Young Arena on September 27th.
Krieger Gets Cracking
Forward Peter Krieger has risen to the top of the Black Hawks' stat sheet in the midst of a four-game point streak. With a goal and six assists in that time, the Oakdale, Minnesota, native now has eleven points this season. Krieger's nine assists place him in a tie for third league-wide, while his 11 points stand 12th with three others in the USHL. Krieger and Mark Friedman are the first Black Hawks to push their point totals to double-digits in 2013/14.
Strong Starts, Seconds
The Black Hawks and Sioux City Musketeers were tied 2-2 at the second intermission Saturday. It was the first time in 2013/14 that Waterloo did not carry a lead into the third period. The Hawks have doubled up their opponents (26-13) in aggregate scoring during the first two periods so far this season. The margin is 16-7 in the middle frame alone.
Power Play Fraternity
Five of eight goals the Black Hawks recorded last weekend versus the Sioux Falls Stampede and Sioux City Musketeers came on the power play. Waterloo leads the USHL with 15 markers in man-advantage situations. The Hawks have contributions of at least one power play goal or assist from a dozen different players; only the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Team USA have power play points from a wider pool of skaters. Hayden Shaw and Blake Winiecki lead the Hawks with six points apiece on special teams.
Weekly Recap
The Hawks notched four power play goals in nine chances Friday to upend the Sioux Falls Stampede 6-2. Peter Krieger, Blake Winiecki, and Liam Pecararo each had three points, while Cal Petersen earned his 30th regular season victory in net. Saturday, Waterloo rued missed special teams chances, going one-for-seven on the power play in a 5-2 loss to the Sioux City Musketeers. Zach Sanford recorded an assist in both contests, extending his personal point streak to six consecutive games.
