Wasil and Smith Set to Return for 2012

September 26, 2011 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Kansas City Command News Release

KANSAS CITY- The Kansas City Command signed two more additions to its 2012 roster Friday with the return of 2011 leading receiver Bret Smith and quarterback Stephen Wasil. Both signings come at the tail end of the Arena Football League's exclusive signing period, which allowed teams to negotiate with its players from a season ago.

Smith was the Command's top receiver last year, finishing with the team lead in a variety of offensive categories, including all-purpose yards, scoring, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions. His best performance of the year was at Iowa in July, where he tallied 12 receptions for 156 yards and one touchdown. Smith will look to build off of his impressive rookie season with similar, if not better, production.

Wasil began 2011 as the backup to JJ Raterink. The two-year AFL veteran was named the team's starter for the final five games of the season. During his tenure, Wasil threw for over 300 yards twice, once in a victory over the eventual ArenaBowl champion Jacksonville Sharks, and was named the AFL's National Guard MVP for his performance in the Command's 50-41 victory over the Cleveland Gladiators. Wasil completed 19 of 23 passes for 243 yards and five touchdowns versus the eventual East Division champions.

Both players will look to play integral roles in 2012. Today marks the end of the AFL exclusive signing period and the beginning of free agency.
